1) FILM SCREENING: "WHO IS BOZO TEXINO?": THE SECRET HISTORY OF HOBO
GRAFFITI (THIS SATURDAY!)

Join us this Saturday, April 18th at 7 PM here at the Internationalist
for a fascinating night of film, graffiti art, freight-hopping
stories, hobo lore, and more!

"Who is Bozo Texino?" chronicles the search for the source of a
ubiquitous and mythic rail graffiti - a simple sketch of a character
with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, "Bozo Texino" -
a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel's gritty black
and white film uncovers a secret society and it?s underground universe
of hobo and railworker graffiti, and includes interviews with
legendary boxcar artists, Coaltrain, Herby, Colossus of Roads, and The
Rambler. Shooting over a 16-year period, Daniel rode freights across
the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex. During his
quest he discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone
mostly unnoticed for a century. Taking inspiration from Beat artists
Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac, the film functions as both a
sub-cultural documentary and a stylized fable on wanderlust and
outsider identity.

Texas-reared, San Francisco exile, and confirmed tramp, Bill Daniel
continues to experiment with survivalism and bricolage in his efforts
to record and report on the various social margins he often finds
himself in. His work began in 1980 with a 10,000-shot photo
documentation of the blossoming punk rock scene in Austin, Texas. His
subcultural documentary subjects have included bicycle messengers,
radical environmentalists, hobo graffiti artists, and swap meet guitar
players. Since completing the film Bill Daniel and "Who is Bozo
Texino?" have been touring on the road, wowing audiences of punks,
geezers, folkies, foamers and graffiti toughs all over the nasty ol'
USA and across Europe and South America.

2) WED, 4/22, 7 PM: "MUSLIMS OF METROPOLIS" - AUTHOR READING WITH KAVITHA
RAJAGOPALAN

Join us for an exciting evening with visiting scholar Kavitha
Rajagopalan as she reads from her new book "Muslims of Metropolis"!

In Muslims of Metropolis, Kavitha Rajagopalan takes a much needed step
in personalizing and humanizing our understanding of the Muslim
diaspora. Tracing the stories of three very different families - a
Palestinian family moving to London, a Kurdish family moving to
Berlin, and a Bangladeshi family moving to New York - she reveals a
level of complexity and nuance that is seldom considered. Through
their voices and in their words, Rajagopalan describes what prompted
these families to leave home, what challenges they faced in adjusting
to their new lives, and how they came to view their place in society.
Interviews with community leaders, social justice organizations, and
with academics and political experts in each of the countries add
additional layers of insight to how broad political issues, like
nationalist conflict, immigration reform, and anti-terrorism
strategies affect the lives of Muslims who have migrated in search of
economic stability and personal happiness. Whether read as simple
stories or broadernnarratives, the voices in this revealing book are
among the many speaking against generalization, prejudice, and fear
that has so far surrounded Muslims living in the West.

Kavitha Rajagopalan has worked in international development and
finance, and as a journalist in India, Germany, and the United States.
She is currently a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute. Visit
Kavitha's website at http://kaviraj.typepad.com.

WED, 4/22, 7 PM: "MUSLIMS OF METROPOLIS" - AUTHOR READING WITH KAVITHA
RAJAGOPALAN
See above!

SAT, 4/25, 7 PM: "SVO: POWERING YOUR VEHICLE WITH STRAIGHT VEGETABLE
OIL" BY FOREST GREGG!
Join us at Internationalist Books as Asheville-based author Forest
Gregg discusses his latest book "SVO: Powering Your Vehicle With
Straight Vegetable Oil."

The benefits of straight vegetable oil (SVO) as an alternate fuel for
diesel engines are many. SVO is cheap, carbon-neutral, uses a waste
product, and does not depend upon centralized corporate infrastructure.

Gregg and his co-author Christopher Goodwin are the designer and
founder, respectively, of Frybrid, the most respected vegetable oil
conversion company in the United States. They have many combined years
of expertise in the use of straight vegetable oil as a fuel and have
sifted through the masses of contradictory, erroneous, and confusing
information on the subject, extracting the very best information
available. Chapters include:

* Vegetable oil sources, extraction, and refining
* Viscosity
* Chemical degradation
* Fuel properties
* Contaminants
* System design
* Engine modifications

SVO is the only book available that explains exactly what is necessary
to convert a diesel vehicle and how to do it properly. It gives
readers the tools to sort through the different companies and online
plans to find something that works well. While technical in nature,
this fully illustrated book is very accessible. Each concept is
introduced and described in great detail. Designed to educate new
consumers, it is also a resource for current conversion owners.
