Saturday, March 14
Regina Hexaphone (http://www.reginahexaphone.com)
Erie Choir (http://www.eriechoir.com)
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Shipwrecker (http://www.myspace.com/shipwreckermuzak)
Greg Humphreys
Bull McCabe's, Durham

This is a fundraiser to fight Cystic Fibrosis. The show begins at 4:00 p.m. and will go until whenever things wind down. The full lineup as of now (with potentially more to be announced) is as follows:

Schooner
Erie Choir
Lynn Blakey
Regina Hexaphone
Greg Humphreys
Zeno Gill
The KinKsmen
Shipwrecker

Saturday, March 14
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
The Bones Royal
Triangle Brewing Company, Durham

This is a CD-release party / bon voyage bash for Red Collar, the members of whom have all just quit their day-jobs in order to become full-time rockers. Their nominal home-base is still gonna be Durham, of course, but for the next six months or so, their primary home will be the road.

Triangle Brewing Company, brewers of exceptionally tasty Belgian and American-style ales, will be hosting this show "kinda like a house-party, warehouse-style." If the weather's as warm & perfect as it is *this* weekend, it'll be outdoors.

Yer $10 gets you in the door, *and* gets you a copy of that new Red Collar CD, "Pilgrim," which is chock-full of all the singalong anthems you doubtless know by heart by now, considering how long this thing has been percolating.

Saturday, March 14
Bishop Allen (http://www.bishopallen.com/)
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band (http://www.myspace.com/mtsthelensvietnamband)
Singsing & Marmar (http://www.myspace.com/singsingmarmar )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

What bugs me is not the existence of bands called things like "The Airborne Toxic Event" or "Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band," but rather that they're actually getting a fair amount of attention, in the blogs and elsewhere, and thus might encourage similar poor naming judgement among other bands. It's a sure sign of civilization's impending collapse.

Saturday, March 14
Kerbloki (http://www.kerbloki.com/)
FrequeNC Sound System (http://www.frequenc.net/happenings.htm)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

It's Nightlight's 6th Anniversary (I know! Amazing! Who'da thunk it??). Congratulations!

Saturday, March 14
Django Haskins (http://www.djangohaskins.com/)
The Proclivities (http://www.myspace.com/theproclivities)
The Moderate
Pour House, Raleigh

Saturday, March 14
Killer Filler (http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller)
The Noseriders (http://www.myspace.com/thenoseriders)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Bryon Settle (Killer Filler, Lud, ex-Pressure Boys) wrote:

Ever since Sleazefest went kaput, and bands like the Family Dollar Pharaohs and X-Rayons hung up their axes, your best chance of getting ones' surf music groove on in the Triangle was with your CD player (Ipods don't have much choice here--yet!). We, the obstinate members of Killer Filler, the Triangle's FINEST surf-soul-rock-lounge- instrumental-fuzz-guitar- organ-from-outer-space band, have sought to rectify this situation, bringing fellow instrumental bands to US, in what we hope will be the first of many shows, what we're calling INSTRO SUMMITS.

Our first Instro Summit (a mini-summit of sorts) will be Saturday, March 14th at the Cave in Chapel Hill, and will feature Killer Filler with Wilmington NC's The Noseriders. They play a ragged-but-right combo of instrumental surf and instrumental new wave music. The Noseriders have evolved from the remains of the Stunt Doubles, Wilmington's other great surf band of recent years. This will be their first trip to our area, and we're hoping they'll have a large, welcoming crowd. This don't-miss meeting of the minds starts at 10pm.

Saturday, March 14
Tiger Bear Wolf (http://www.tigerbearwolf.com)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Actual Persons (Living or Dead) (http://www.myspace.com/actualpersonslivingordead)
The Pinhook, Durham

One of many good things about Maple Stave's Evan Rowe playing in des_ark is that he's in constant contact with guitarist Noah Howard, of the awesome but often hibernatory Greensboro band TigerBearWolf. They've been lured out of hibernation (is it this fucked-up weather?) for this one; don't miss it.

Sunday, March 15
Savage Knights (http://www.retroactivedynamics.com)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Savage Knights merge post-Zorn skronk with shots of heavy rock *and* a deep appreciation for Eric Dolphy; they can be subtly gorgeous and pummeling, often within the space of a single song.

4:00 p.m. @ 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, March 15
Flicker (http://www.chapel-hill.nc.us/flicker)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

The latest installment in the long-running monthly-ish local short-films series/minifestival. Everything's shot on film & under 20 minutes; it's the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday evening.

Sunday, March 15
Dirty Little Heaters (http://www.myspace.com/thedirtylittleheaters)
Let's Wrestle (http://www.myspace.com/letsfuckingwrestle)
Suckers (http://www.myspace.com/suckerstheband)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

You'd have to work pretty damn hard to have a bad time at a Dirty Little Heaters show; their garage-rock stomp and Reese McHenry's mighty eight-lunged bellow will pretty much erase anything you've got stuck in yr brain, good & bad alike.

Monday, March 16
Orphan
Obits (http://www.myspace.com/obitsband)
Bear Hands (http://www.myspace.com/bearhandsband)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, March 17
Takka Takka (http://www.myspace.com/takkatakka)
Sister Suvi (http://www.myspace.com/sistersuvi)
Lord Jeff
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, March 18
Battle Rockets (http://www.myspace.com/battlerockets)
Goodbye, Titan (http://www.myspace.com/loudestsilenceever)
Bicycle Day (http://myspace.com/bicycleday1)
Marvell Building, Durham

This is an "instrumental music showcase" highlighting the latest wave of local up-and-comers.

Wednesday, March 18
Wes Phillips (http://www.myspace.com/wesleydongeroga)
Butterflies (http://www.myspace.com/butterfliesnc)
Husband and Wife
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a NONSMOKING show.

Butterflies are the current project of longtime Trekky staple Josh Kimbrough (Mortar and Pestle).

Per the Indy, Wes Phillips is bringing both his former Ticonderoga bandmates, Mark Paulson and Phil Moore, along to back him up. Ticonderoga put out some amazing records, played some dumbfounding, brilliant shows, and split up far too soon. Phil & Mark have been busy enough with Bowerbirds, but Wes has been keeping a lower profile, mostly recording at home (some of his output can be downloaded from cytunes.org).

Wednesday, March 18
Twilighter (http://twilighter.net/)
Ampline (http://www.ampline.net)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Thursday, March 19
A.C. Newman (http://www.acnewman.net/)
The Broken West (http://www.thebrokenwest.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Thursday, March 19
John Vanderslice (http://www.johnvanderslice.com/)
The Mountain Goats (http://www.themountaingoats.net/)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

This is probably sold out; in fact, I hope it is, because it's meant partly as a fundraiser to help the Coffeehouse upgrade/repair their PA system, which has been giving them fits for months now. It has curtailed their ability to put on shows, and they've been sorely missed.

Thursday, March 19
I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Lake Inferior (http://www.myspace.com/lakeinferiormusic)
Pink Flag (http://www.myspace.com/pinkflagnc)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This isn't just a NONSMOKING show, it's also "Cancer Sucks '09 - A Benefit for Relay for Life." Lake Inferior is one of those new-ish UNC bands on the Vinyl Records roster. I Was Totally Destroying It you probably know about by now; they're perpetually teetering on the verge of *something*. Pink Flag are perpetually teetering on the fine line between brilliance and utter collapse, which is a fine place to be.

Thursday, March 19
Casta (http://www.myspace.com/casta1)
Zed's Dead (http://www.myspace.com/zedsdead27)
Supervision
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Zed's Dead
11:00 - Supervision
10:00 - Casta

Thursday, March 19
Bull City (http://www.bullcitytheband.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Bull City are a great, tight, dual-guitar rockband from Durham, who take a fair number of cues from folks like Neil Young, but also folks like Alex Chilton.

Thursday, March 19
Huguenots (http://www.myspace.com/thehuguenotsmusic)
The Catch Fire
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Thursday, March 19
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
Jeff Crawford
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Friday, March 20
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Battle Rockets (http://www.myspace.com/battlerockets)
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

Friday, March 20
Katastrophe (http://www.katastropherap.com/)
Athens Boys Choir (http://www.myspace.com/athensboyschoir)
Rebekah.Ann (http://www.myspace.com/eberhardtnc)
Humble Tripe (http://www.myspace.com/shawnluby)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Friday, March 20
Joe Romeo & the Orange County Volunteers (http://www.myspace.com/joeromeomusic)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

I think Joe & the OCVs are playing both the early & late sets at the Cave tonight. They've got a great new album out, their first, so withdraw an extra ten bucks from the ATM.

Friday, March 20
Sorry About Dresden (http://www.sorryaboutdresden.com)
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This isn't listed as nonsmoking (HEPLER!), so consider yourself warned. This is a CD-release party for the new Embarrassing Fruits full-length, wherein they manage to shake off some of the Archers & Pavement comparisons, but can't quite shake the Dinosaur & Sebadoh ones. It's power-trio indie-rock, regardless.

Sorry About Dresden headed up the third wave of Chapel Hill indie-rock, back in the mid-late 90s, and it's been just long enough that you might've forgotten how fucking great they were. And still are.

Saturday, March 21
UNC vs Duke Battle of the Bands
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

This gets underway at 7:00 p.m, with a ridiculous number of bands:

Playing for UNC:

The Huguenots
Lake Inferior
The Nomad Kings
D.LIV(E)
Apollo
Lafcadio

Playing for DUKE:

Cool Ethan
Panda Force
Soulless Dogs
David Eisenband
Tauri Wind
Hopus

Each of the 6 bands will be performing a short set at the Coffeehouse and a jury and the audience will decide the final 2 bands from each school. The 2 remaining bands will be performing a longer set and a winner will be chosen based on audience response and the jury's marks. THE WINNER, may they be from Duke or UNC, WILL BE PERFORMING AT DUKE'S LDOC AND WILL RECEIVE A CASH PRIZE!

Saturday, March 21
The Carolina Heartbreakers (http://www.myspace.com/carolinaheartbreakers)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Carolina Heartbreakers are not a rockband, but are rather a fairly recently assembled local burlesque troupe. Or, more properly, a supertroupe, as some-or-all of them have been plying their trade separately for a while now.

Saturday, March 21
Stratocruiser (http://www.stratocruisermusic.com/)
The Stars Explode (http://www.myspace.com/thestarsexplode)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, March 21
919Noise Showcase
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

This month's lineup: Clang Quartet / Yanni Eham / Joe Hendrix / LuvJax / Ghost Hand / CheezFace

Saturday, March 21
Harmute (http://www.myspace.com/harmute)
Cinemasophia (http://www.myspace.com/cinemasophia)
Jack Sprat Cafe, Chapel Hill

Sunday, March 22
From the Depths
Deathrat
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Monday, March 23
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
River City Ransom
Dark Knights of Camelot (http://www.myspace.com/darkknightsofcamelot)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Tuesday, March 24
Titus Andronicus (http://www.myspace.com/titusandronicus)
Here We Go Magic (http://www.myspace.com/herewegomagic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

[smoking show]

The SXSW begins to turn, and those bands who didn't flow through on their way down to Austin begin to ebb through on their ways back home.

I still haven't seen Titus Andronicus, but was surprised to finally hear their much-lauded "The Airing of Grievances," and hear in it shades of both Celt-punk and Conor Oberst-style vocal quaver, along with all the over-the-top uncontrolled anthemic fervor I'd been led to expect.

Tuesday, March 24
A is Jump (http://www.myspace.com/aisjump2)
Bad Credit No Credit (http://www.myspace.com/bathtimemusic)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, March 24
Justin Jones & the Driving Rain
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
