The next installment of Secondhand Freespace will focus in on
recording, and more specifically the process of production. We will
have an open discussion with legendary producers and artists who live
and work right in our backyard. What is the role of the producer in
recording an artist's music and what is the process for gaining
insight into artist's creative vision? How does a producer influence
an artist to make the "right" aesthetic decisions while balancing the
level of direction provided to the artist? How does this all fit in a
DIY and digital age?
This Panel will be moderated by Jim Brantley, local musician (Bull
City, Ashley Stove) who has recorded with and without producer, at
home, in the studio, and brings a wealth of insight and inquiry into
the process. Panelists are:
- Mitch Easter (Lets Active) continues to work as a musician and
producer at his studio, The Fidelitorium near Winston-Salem. As a
producer, he s worked with many acts including local acts Birds of
Avalon, Shalini, as well as national acts such as R.E.M., Pavement,
Suzanne Vega, Marshall Crenshaw, and Velvet Crush.
- Chris Stamey (dB's) has over 40 years recording experience both as
an artist, sound engineer and producer. He works out of his studio,
Modern Recording, and has worked with hundreds of artists including
local acts such as Whiskeytown, The Rosebuds, Caitlin Cary, as well as
Alejandro Escovedo, and more.
-Nick Peterson (Monsonia) has been recording as a live sound
engineer for 6 years. He founded "Track and Field", an embellished,
home studio. He is known for his documentary style and has
recorded over 500 local and national bands. Additionally, he has
mastered projects for a diverse set of acts, from Bon Iver to the
Melvins.
- Rick Miller (Southern Culture on the Skids) Rick Miller has
released dozens of LPs and EPs, including three for major label
Geffen, with SCOTS, Chapel Hill's The Moaners, Reverend Horton Heat,
the 45's and others. He continue to work out of his studio, Kudzu
Ranch Recorders in Mebane.
Unfortunately Ivan Howard (The Rosebuds) will no longer be able to
participate in this panel due to touring obligations.

General Info about 2ndhand Freespace:
The objective of "Secondhand Freespace" is to break down and
de-mystify various aspects of the music industry by tapping into the
wealth of knowledge that currently exists throughout the state of
North Carolina. Each forum will consist of a panel discussion on a
specific music-related topic (such as booking, recording, publicity,
production, or distribution) and the panel will consist of people who
operate in that area of the industry.
In addition to the general discussion, a Q&A section will follow each
panel to provide more specific insight.
Additionally, each forum will include networking opportunities to meet
both the panelists and other participants. The overall goal of the
night is to not only have people learn more about an area of the
industry, but hopefully meet like-minded individuals who can they can
continue to share ideas with after the forum has ended.
