Friday, November 21
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Armadillo Grill @ the Bryan Center, Duke W. Campus, Durham

These shows kick off right at 5:00 p.m, which times out just right if you're a disgruntled Duke employee (or can sneak away from work a little early). Embarrassing Fruits are a power trio working in the classic '90s indie-rock mode. Dry Heathens are a Replacementsy rockband. Schooner are harder to describe: their first impression is of kinda-croony pop music, but that quickly gives way to an undercurrent of weirdness that's always threatening to well up & overwhelm the pop with something far freakier.

Friday, November 21
The Physics of Meaning (http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/)
Butterflies (http://www.myspace.com/butterfliesnc)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

This is a dual CD-release for both Butterflies and Physics of Meaning.

Friday, November 21
Man Will Destroy Himself
Tooth (http://www.myspace.com/toothrocks)
Hatchetface (http://www.myspace.com/hatchetfacephilly)
The Pinhook, Durham

Tooth are moving rapidly beyond "best metal band in Durham" in the direction of "one of the best metal bands I've ever seen." And I saw Ronnie James Dio in '85.

Friday, November 21
Juan Huevos (http://www.myspace.com/juanhuevos)
Stella By Starlight (http://www.myspace.com/stellabystarlightband)
Mike Posner & the Brain Trust (http://www.myspace.com/mikeposner)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, November 21
Impossible Hair (http://www.myspace.com/impossiblehair)
Waumiss (http://www.myspace.com/waumiss)
The Tender Fruit (http://www.myspace.com/thetenderfruit)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, November 21
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Rocket Cottage
Whatever Brains (http://www.myspace.com/whateverbrains)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Double Negative are phenomenal, at once totally hardcore and yet something wholly other as well. I wonder whether the sense of desperation that pervades everything they do will have eased any since the election . . . then again, it's not like we're any less FUCKED now than we were two weeks go.

Saturday, November 22
The Homewreckers (http://www.myspace.com/jackandjillhomewrecker)
Pink Flag (http://www.myspace.com/pinkflagnc)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

This is a CD-release party for both Pink Flag & the Homewreckers. Homewreckers moved here from down east somewhere, but I haven't seen them yet. Pink Flag are an all-woman punkrock band who seem equally willing to churn out catchy pop choruses or abrasive avant-punk a la Raincoats or Au Pairs. I really enjoyed their set at Troika last weekend.

Saturday, November 22
Mates of State (http://www.matesofstate.com)
Brother Reade
The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Saturday, November 22
Hank Sinatra (http://www.hank-sinatra.com/)
Steve Howell & The Lonesome Teardrops
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Steve Howell used to play guitar & sing in the Backsliders; after they split up, he held down the guitar duties in the $2 Pistols for a while. Now that he fronts his own outfit, he's playing classic country in a more straightforward manner than either of those other two bands.

Saturday, November 22
Sugar in the Dirt (http://www.myspace.com/sugarinthedirt)
Pistil (http://myspace.com/pistilband)
The Pinhook, Durham

All hail the Pinhook for posting start times on their website!

11:00 Sugar in the Dirt
10:00 Pistil

Saturday, November 22
Neil Halstead
Ryan Gustafson (http://www.myspace.com/ryangustafsonmusic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, November 22
The Nothing Noise (http://www.myspace.com/thenothingnoise)
Posse Machine
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The Nightlight website has a somewhat cryptic message linking this show to the UNC student-run label Vinyl Records. http://vinylrecordsunc.wordpress.com/

Saturday, November 22
Lud (http://www.ludland.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is an album-release party for the new Lud album, "V," their fifth. It's awesome (of course), and more importantly, I was reminded again last night, within 15 seconds of the start of their set, that they're easily one of the best bands in the Triangle. Moreso now that they've corralled Sara Bell into becoming a full-time member of the band. Don't miss this show.

Saturday, November 22
Razpa (http://www.myspace.com/razpamusic)
Jack Sprat Cafe, Chapel Hill

Saturday, November 22
Caltrop (http://www.myspace.com/caltropband)
The Curtains of Night (http://myspace.com/thecurtainsofnight)
Night of the Wolf (http://www.myspace.com/nightofthewolfmusic)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Swinging back around on the return leg of their fall tour, Caltrop and Curtains of Night should be battle-hardened and extra-massive.

Sunday, November 23
Edie Sedgwick (http://www.ediesedgwick.biz/)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Sunday, November 23
Sugar in the Dirt (http://www.myspace.com/sugarinthedirt)
Br'er (http://www.myspace.com/brrer)
The End of the World (http://www.myspace.com/theendoftheworld)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sunday, November 23
Dirty Little Heaters (http://www.myspace.com/thedirtylittleheaters)
Sir Arthur and His Royal Knights (http://mannsworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/sir-arthur-his-royal-knights.html)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

This is a birthday bash for Triangle blogger/rockstar/fan Karen A. Mann.

Monday, November 24
A. A. Bondy (http://www.myspace.com/aabondy)
The Dogwood Deddy (http://www.reverbnation.com/thedogwooddeddy)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, November 25
Gang Gang Dance (http://www.thesocialregistry.com/artist_pages/ggd.html)
Rainbow Arabia (http://www.rainbowarabia.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Tuesday, November 25
Anaturale (http://www.myspace.com/anaturale)
Athens Boys Choir (http://www.myspace.com/athensboyschoir)
Farmer
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Plus burlesque performances by Miss Mary Wanna. http://www.myspace.com/missmarywanna

Wednesday, November 26
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
The Bronzed Chorus (http://www.myspace.com/thebronzedchorus)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Local Bands, Local Beers moves to Wednesday due to the holiday.

Friday, November 28
Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship? (http://www.myspace.com/whyarewebuildingsuchabigship)
Clawform
Hurray for the Riff Raff (http://www.myspace.com/hurrayfortheriffraff)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Clawform is Colin Booy with a laptop (Linux! I saw it!), some amps & pedals, and a banjo. And he totally fucking shreds. It kinda had to start out as a joke (maybe not on Colin's part, but cosmically) but goddamn, these last couple of shows have just been pure massive heavy genius.

Friday, November 28
Rat Jackson (http://www.myspace.com/ratjacksonmusic)
Aminal Music (http://www.myspace.com/theaminalmusic)
Pizza Palace, Durham

The Pizza Palace is a giant geodesic dome in North Durham. Rat Jackson and Aminal Music are both kinda dirty rock-n-roll bands from Chapel Hill. Rat Jackson because they really are a down-n-dirty drunken garage-rock outfit; Aminal Music because any band with both Joe Caparo and Cam Weeks just has to be existentially dirty, regardless of how they sound.

Friday, November 28
Craig Hilton
Small Life Form (http://www.silbermedia.com/smalllifeform/)
Weather Machine (http://www.myspace.com/919weathermachine)
Quetzatl (http://www.myspace.com/quetzatlmusic)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

This is a 919 Noise Collective showcase; visuals provided by Night Light Riders. http://www.myspace.com/nightlightriders

Friday, November 28
Prabir and the Substitutes (http://www.prabirandthesubstitutes.com/)
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
The Proclivities (http://www.myspace.com/theproclivities)
Pour House, Raleigh

Friday, November 28
I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Blankface (http://www.myspace.com/blankfacerock)
Josh Moore (http://www.myspace.com/joshuamoore)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Blankface were one of those emo/pop-punk bands that the kids all seem to like, but then they broke up. This is a reunion show. I wonder if they know the other Blankface, the one that has been scrawling shitty marker tags all over WXDU? I'd love to see a rumble.

Saturday, November 29
The Backbeat (http://www.thebackbeatcentral.com)
Hege V (http://www.vivanashvegas.com/home.htm)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Saturday, November 29
Inspector 22
Dylan Gilbert
Bow Hunter
Ant Disaster
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Saturday, November 29
Thad Cockrell (http://www.thadcockrell.com/)
Bright Young Things
The Moderate
Pour House, Raleigh

Saturday, November 29
My Radio (http://www.myradioband.com)
The Sundowners
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, November 29
Jucifer (http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Vine/6452/)
Transient
Black Skies (http://blackskies.us/)
Sloburn
Volume 11 Tavern, Raleigh

Saturday, November 29
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Pinche Gringo (http://www.myspace.com/pinchegringoband)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

I saw the Loners last week for at least the dozenth time, and they were pure big-beat gtr/drums garage-rock perfection, as always. They're a treasure.

Sunday, November 30
Jule Brown (http://www.julebrown.org)
Fastball (http://www.fastballtheband.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Sunday, November 30
Western Civ. (http://westerncivrock.com)
Like Hell I Will (http://www.myspace.com/likehelliwill)
My Majesty in Oxygen (http://www.myspace.com/mymajestyinoxygen)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Yet another installment of proof that all the good band names have been taken.

Monday, December 1
Velvet (http://www.velvetpop.com)
snmnmnm (http://www.snmnmnm.com/)
Roxcetera (http://www.myspace.com/roxcetera)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Monday, December 1
Snowden (http://www.snowden.info/)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Monday, December 1
Annihilation Time (http://www.holychurchofannihilation.com/)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Tooth (http://www.myspace.com/toothrocks)
Sir Arthur and His Royal Knights (http://mannsworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/sir-arthur-his-royal-knights.html)
Logic Problem
Volume 11 Tavern, Raleigh

Two of my favorite local bands of all time, Tooth and Double Negative, are on this bill, which *almost* negates the fact that five bands on a Monday night is still inexcusable.
