MON 8/18, 7:00 PM: "CONSUMING CULTURE: A Story of Halves and Have-Nots"
Join us at the Internationalist for a potluck and exciting multimedia
performance! A pair of puppeteers travel from Philadelphia to San
Francisco, stopping along the way to unpack an evening of provocative
shadow theatre and half-bred antics around the politics of food.
While governments spar with their people and each other, climates
shift, culinary traditions collapse, and we find Anna Whitehead and
Michelle Posadas navigating their giant refrigerator through the
rising tides of the global food crisis. Singing songs and telling
stores that will make your mouth water and your head spin, Anna and
Michelle include us all in their coffee table conversation about our
roles in the current food epidemic and what is to be done... or undone.

Anna Whitehead is a writer, painter, and performer who occupies most
of her time making music under the guise of Jailbird Thunderheart.
She has taught puppet, parade and mural arts to adults and kids and
regularly collaborates with her peers in performances about
gentrification, ownership, immigration, history, and female
sexuality. Anna is on her way to earning a MFA in social practice and
visual criticism at California College of the Arts. Michelle Posadas
combines her skills as a visual artist, sculptor, puppeteer, parade-
maker, designer, photographer and videographer to tell personal
stories that connect to larger issues. Her work touches on the War in
Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, and the history of resistance movements in
the Philippines, all woven in between her own family narrative.
Posadas is a storyteller and teacher who brings communities together
through collective art making and activism.

All events take place at the Internationalist (405 W. Franklin St.)
unless otherwise noted.

TUES 8/19, 7 PM - THOREAU: "WALDEN NOW!" (RADICAL THINKERS LECTURE
SERIES)
Join us at Internationalist Books and Community Center for an ongoing
series of lectures and discussions on subversive thinkers. Starting
August 19th, every Tuesday night at 7 PM at 405 W. Franklin St. in
Chapel Hill, we will host radical intellectual historian William
Manson, PhD, for a weekly series of in-depth examinations of thinkers
ranging from Thoreau to Freud. Each evening will feature the
screening of a 28-minute video lecture about the fundamentals of a
philosopher?s thought and their contributions to radical critiques of
society, followed by a lively facilitated discussion about the
contemporary relevance of their ideas.

FRI 8/22, 7:30 PM: ACOUSTIC CONCERT / SHORT FILM / IWW FUNDRAISER!
Join us at Internationalist Books for a rousing night of union songs,
impassioned discussion, learning about the International Workers of
the World, and raising money in solidarity with IWW activists!

On August 11th, 2007, a peaceful march in solidarity with immigrant
workers facing miserable conditions organized by the Providence, RI
chapter of International Workers of the World (IWW) was brutally
attacked by police. Two IWW members, Alexandra Svoboda and Jason
Friedmutter, were arrested simply for participating, and Svoboda
suffered severe injuries to her knee and leg during the unreasonable
arrest. Now, almost a year later, the two activists still face legal
charges while Svoboda has accumulated over $100,000 of medical bills.
Activists around the country are mobilizing to raise awareness about
the injustice and to raise money towards their legal and medical
costs. Here in Chapel Hill, you can get involved at this exciting
event at the Internationalist!

The evening will feature radical acoustic union songs from local
musician Dan Mac, followed by a short film about the IWW and
information about radical union struggles as well as the
demonstration and police brutality. We'll pass the hat to help
support our comrades in Rhode Island while we plan strategies to
pressure the Providence police to drop all charges and pay
restitution for their life-threatening aggression. Don't miss this
opportunity to support the interlocking struggles for justice against
immigrant exploitation, crackdown on unions, police brutality!

SAT 8/23, 2 PM: CHILDREN?S AUTHOR READING WITH STEPHEN RABURN:
"ISOBEL AND HER DAD TAKE A TRIP TO THE MOON"
Join us at Internationalist Books for a fun-filled, all-ages
afternoon with local author Stephen Raburn, as he reads from his new
children's book, "Isobel and Her Dad Take a Trip to the Moon." A
young girl and her father decide to spice up the summer a little by
embarking on a great adventure - a trip to the moon. After building a
rocket ship and surviving a wrong turn that almost leads the pair to
Mars instead, Isobel and her dad arrive on the moon, where Isobel
meets a young moon girl named Maya. The two become fast friends, as
Maya shows Isobel all around the moon, making stops at the Luna Moth
Museum and the Moon Pie Factory, playing hide and seek in the
craters, and explore Mons Huygens (the highest point on the moon).
After a day filled with fun and thrills and newfound friendship the
two little girls must say goodbye. Isobel and Maya promise that
they'll write to each other and that someday, Maya will visit Isobel
at her home in North Carolina.

Durham resident Stephen Raburn's background and training is in the
field of child psychology. He is known as a zealous advocate for the
rights and needs of children and has spent most of his adulthood
leading child-serving nonprofit organizations. Along the way, he has
written dozens of articles (most of which have a more serious tone
than this book) that have appeared in newspapers, magazines and
professional journals. This is his first children's book. Proceeds
from the sale of the book will be donated to children's charities.

TUES 8/26, 7 PM - SOCRATES: "DISSENT AND INTEGRITY" (RADICAL THINKERS
LECTURE SERIES)

FRI 8/29, 5:30 PM: HOUSE PARTY/DOCUMENTARY SCREENING- "NEW ORLEANS:
PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE?" Want to help ensure a sustainable recovery
for New Orleans and the Gulf Coast? Mark your calendar to head to our
house party to protect the Gulf's natural storm defenses!

The third anniversary of Katrina is fast approaching but the Gulf
Coast and its communities still need help. Levees are just not enough
to protect coastal communities from powerful hurricanes. Natural
storm defenses, such as wetlands, coastal forests, and barrier
islands, are essential to the survival of these vibrant Gulf Coast
communities yet every 35 minutes we lose a football fields worth of
wetlands to erosion. Strong leadership is required to restore the
coastal wetlands and you can help convince our nation's leaders to
take action by joining us at a screening of "New Orleans: Past,
Present, Future?" by Walter Williams. This moving series of three
short films that document the evolution of our coastal wetlands
crisis and the solutions for our survival. The film and event are
sponsored by the Gulf Restoration Network, a network of
environmental, social justice, and citizens' groups and individuals
committed to restoring the Gulf of Mexico to an ecologically and
biologically sustainable condition.

NEW LOCAL SKILLSHARE / FREE SKOOL!

Do you like to make stuff, learn things, and teach others? A local
Skillshare/DIY/Art Collective, Free Skool, Radical Event Bulletin,
and Space/Material/Tool Share is being formed. This is a way for
local creative types to find each other to make and do stuff
together. There are a lot of innovative, skilled, and imaginative
people in this area. Let's pool our knowledge, skills, and resources
to exponentialize our creative input and output. So if you want to
make masks or soap or vegan liqueurs or a rope ladder or a mud oven
or collaged formal wear or tamales or hula hoops or pretty much
anything else, or find others to play soccer or practice tai chi
with, or host a workshop on blowing glass or screen-printing, or
organize a potluck or salon, or just put out an idea to the
community; check this thing out. This is a way to get your desires
out of your head and into the awareness of lots of other like-minded
local people. Let's get together for the artistic and practical.
This is completely non-commercial and local. The website is http://
