*Nightlight presents a two-night mini-festival/spotlight on (mostly) local
singer-songwriters this Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1! Also this
week: Punk rawk, noise rawk, FrequeNC rawk, and more!*
*
Tuesday, 7/29, 9:30pm ($5)*
*The Dispensers* - Punks from Durham. From their website: We're a band
based outta Durham looking for a good time, and a chance to rock!! hell yes.
Created by Tristan and Peter some time about a year ago, we recently
collected Greg on Bass, and James on drums. We constantly write songs and we
play punk/ska originals focusing on politics, people, and having a good
time.
*
Kill and Eat* - It's been a while since Nightlight hosted a
true-to-description noise-rock band. Kill and Eat plays the noisiest rock
imaginable: riffs disintegrate into squealing feedback, percussion
alternately swirls and pounds, riotous vocals smear themselves over top
everything else. Good stuff.
*Wednesday, 7/30, 9:30pm ($5)
Armed Forces* - From the Independent: They're a shoulder-shimmying strumpet
with a runaway past, a joyriding, drug-addled gallon of gas looking for a
sucker to light their lucky. Glam punk-poppers Armed Forces plays a
decadent, rebellion-riddled three-card monte of '60s garage-soul organ,
bloozy, slashing blasts of guitar Thunders, and frontman Brandon Jazz's
cooly importuning vocals. The indefatigable, energetic rhythms power big
hooks sprinkled with backing harmonies, often suggesting a slightly grimier
iteration of fellow Nashville residents The Pink Spiders (one guests on
debut EP, *Modern Gospel for Modern Men & Women*). A combustible blend of
glue-huffing threats, loitering libido and knee-jerk defiance, Armed Forces
is a reminder seditious teen spirit springs eternal.
*
Merch* - Indie rock from San Francisco. From their website: MERCH is the
performing and recording monicker of bandleader/songwriter/vocalist Joe
Medina and whatevermusicians happen to be playing with him at any given
time. The resultant sound is loosely categorized as "cello-rock", only there
are also banjos, guitars, drums, keyboards, bells, fiddles, and many other
mysterious sounds involved.
*Fire in the Woods* - Indie rock from Durham. Features members of Eerie
Choir, The Strugglers, and more.
*
Thursday, 7/31, 9:30pm ($5)*
*Nightlight presents a two-night mini-festival/spotlight on (mostly) local
singer-songwriters Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1!*
*
Ann Humphreys* - From her website: Ann Humphreys got her first guitar as a
high-school graduation present from her grandmother, who always thought she
had the prettiest voice. A native North Carolinian, she grew up listening to
her dad's bluegrass and cosmic cowboy albums, and in the last few years she
has been lucky enough to sing and play with both Greg Hawks of the Tremblers
and John Howie Jr. of the Two Dollar Pistols, as well as perform solo. She
has also recorded and performed with her multi-talented and groovy brother,
Greg Humphreys, of the local soul band Hobex.
*
Alex Culbreth* - "Well-constructed music and a stirring voice. A definite
up-and-comer." -Joel Pomerantz, "SAW Songwriters Showcase" Presenter+MC.
"This guy plays guitar and writes songs like none other. He isn't afraid to
state his opinion on sensitive topics and to really provoke some thought. He
plays guitar beautifully in incredible tunings and his lyrics are full of
intelligence, historical references, and beautiful poetry." -Joe Isaacs,
"Music Matters"
*Anthony Neff* - Raleigh singer/songwriter. From his website: With the
completion of his second release issued through Porch Glow Records, Anthony
Neff continues to build upon his reputation as a songwriter and performer of
considerable depth. Chase Your Burden, much like its predecessor Generation
X-istential Blues, is built upon a solid framework of warm tones,
intelligent lyrics and lasting melodies. Touches of Americana, rock, folk
and pop music are interspersed throughout Anthony's songs, yet he manages to
avoid easy categorization into any one of these labels.
*
Friday, 8/1, 9:30pm ($5)*
*Nightlight presents a two-night mini-festival/spotlight on (mostly) local
singer-songwriters Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1!
**The Tourist* - From his website: The Tourist does what every other
red-blooded, middle-class male does: he plays the guitar. What's the
incentive, then, to listen to yet another dime a dozen, suburban kid who has
"feelings" and "loves" things and obviously is way too "self-effacing" for
his own good, you ask? Cash. That, and he's better than a lot of them.
*
The Invisible Hand* - From his website: Ultimately, the goal of harnessing
chaos and noise into beautiful, thought-out, popping melodies has been
apparent in Adam's music since the ripe age of fourteen. His passion for
turning heads with abrasive timbres, like the crack of falling timber to the
aftermath of a slow decay into earth's perpetual loop of life via
degradation. Continually tired of being force fed ideas, songwriting is the
only way to convey an aural image that is truly unique to his personal
experiences, experiences which are a regular occurrence and common to
everyone. They range from philosophy and politics to love and food. But the
obvious meanings and meanderings of the lyrics only carries weight with the
strength of melody's backbone, which has been his focus for the entirety of
his career.
*Dylan Gilbert* - From the Raleigh Hatchet: Both romantic and realist,
Gilberts young mind shows wisdom beyond his years. At nineteen, he already
showcases what promises to be a rockin career in music. An amazing talent,
he has nowhere to go but up....Dylans early display of maturity as a singer,
songwriter, and guitarist has only to age like the fine Bordeaux that he is,
and the world will be drunk, buzzing about him soon.
*
The Sibling Project* - From The DTH's Diversions: The heartfelt
effervescence of The Sibling Project's brand of indie pop is entirely
accessible, leaning on the male-female vocals of real-life siblings Danny
and Lindsey Ranck. Laptop beats mesh with Danny's acoustic guitar and
Lindsey's keyboards to create a sweetly melodic backdrop to the unprocessed,
earnest sound of the vocals.*
Saturday, 8/2, 9:30pm ($5)
