Friday, October 19
Michael Holland (http://www.bigjohnsrecords.com)
Puritan Rodeo Show (http://www.thepuritanrodeoshow.blogspot.com/)
Sweet By and By (http://www.myspace.com/sweetbyby )
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
Definitely the Maybes (http://www.chrisstamey.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a benefit for some folks whose apartments in Colonial Village at Highland Hills burned up last month. Definitely the Maybes are a new collaboration between Chris Stamey and Matt McMichaels, formerly of Mayflies USA. Their live squad also apparently includes Chuck Garrison & Peter Holsapple.

Friday, October 19
Clang Quartet (http://www.myspace.com/clangquartet)
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Beloved Binge (http://www.myspace.com/belovedbinge)
Brimstone Howl
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Three bands who consistently hold my interest, even at my most jaded moments. Cantwell Gomez and Jordan write shape-shifting songs where you can see the weight floating in the air over their heads, being tossed back and forth between the three of them. Beloved Binge have this habit of cramming two songs into every song, and then flipping back and forth between 'em, like a married couple sitting on the couch, fighting over the remote.

Clang Quartet: Scotty Irving loves Jesus, and after seeing his Clang Quartet, you'll be left believing that Jesus loves metallic percussion & intermittent squealing noise-blasts.

Friday, October 19
Einum Bynum (http://www.myspace.com/bryceclaytoneiman)
Soundpainting Orchestra
Good Luck Buddy
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

This is another installment of Recess; here's a blurb:

"Let's begin with Soundpainting Orchestra, the brainchild of Shannon Morrow. This project promises to be a well-rehearsed and clearly defined intuition based creation of the intersection between visualization, auditory stimulation, and orchestral improvisation. Highly conceptual and highly recommended. Continue with Nightlight loyal patron Bryce Clayton Eiman, who creates sophisticated yet pastoral compositions through a cleverly tailored quilt of found sounds, textures, static, and light. The site-specific feedback loopery and joyous choral singing of Hispanic Dance Club has eaten itself for breakfast and has come out the other end as Good Luck Buddy, a dialectic sound/text experiment rooted in laptop drones, analog electronics, and tape collage."

Friday, October 19
Stratocruiser (http://www.stratocruisermusic.com/)
Tim Lee 3 (http://ww.myspace.com/timleemusic)
Junior League (http://www.myspace.com/juniorleaguetunes)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, October 19
Horsehead (http://www.horseheadmusic.com)
Octane Saints
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Saturday, October 20
Kerbloki (http://www.kerbloki.com/)
Juan Huevos (http://www.myspace.com/juanhuevos)
Fighting Poseidon (http://www.myspace.com/fightingposeidon)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Saturday, October 20
Mingus Young (http://www.mingusyoung.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, October 20
Film School (http://www.myspace.com/filmschool)
Division Day (http://www.myspace.com/divisionday)
Eulogies (http://www.myspace.com/eulogiesmusic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, October 20
Jimmy & The Teasers (http://www.geocities.com/booze1031/teasers.html)
The Griefs (http://www.myspace.com/thegriefs)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Sunday, October 21
Down in the Dumps (http://www.myspace.com/downinthedumps)
Off With Their Heads (http://www.myspace.com/offwiththeirheads)
Four Letter Word (http://www.myspace.com/4lw)
Logic Problem
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Sunday, October 21
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Monotonix (http://www.monotonix.com/)
The Valley Arena (http://www.thevalleyarena.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Monotonix are from Tel Aviv, IIRC. No clue what that means in 2007. Blag'ard are from Chapel Hill, and they sound like what you'd get if the guitarist from one of those squirrelly-guitars indie-rock bands of the '90s emerged from hiding/cocoon 10 years later & picked up where he left off, only with just a drummer to back him up. Joe Taylor, guitarist for Capsize 7, to be precise.

Sunday, October 21
New Town Drunks (http://www.newtowndrunks.com/)
The Griefs (http://www.myspace.com/thegriefs)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Monday, October 22
Sweater Weather (http://www.sweater-weather.com)
Georgie James (http://www.myspace.com/georgiejames)
Le Loup (http://www.myspace.com/leloupmusic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sweater Weather just released a debut CD full of their intimate/exhilarating orchestral art-pop. They're all (or mostly) UNC undergrads, so check this out if you're under the mistaken impression that "the kids" don't do live music nowadays.

Monday, October 22
Table (http://www.myspace.com/table)
Monotonix (http://www.monotonix.com/)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Tuesday, October 23
Robbers on High Street (http://www.robbersonhighstreet.com/)
Great Northern (http://www.myspace.com/greatnorthern)
Shaky Hands (http://www.myspace.com/shakyhands)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, October 23
I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Minipop (http://www.myspace.com/minipop)
Reservoir, Carrboro

I Was Totally Destroying It just released their debut CD, and I can honestly say that of all the local releases I've heard over the past 15 years, it sounds the most like something you might hear on a multiplex action-movie trailer, or the soundtrack to some kind of MTV extreme sports-meets-soap opera show. As I can only assume that was the goal (this is a sound that one cannot achieve accidentally), I have to say they've succeeded admirably.

Wednesday, October 24
Castanets (http://www.asthmatickitty.com/musicians.php?artistID=2)
Deer Tick (http://www.myspace.com/deertick)
Barghest (http://www.myspace.com/jesseainslie)
The Extraordinaires (http://www.myspace.com/theextraordinaires)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, October 24
The Hold Steady (http://www.theholdsteady.com/)
Art Brut (http://www.artbrut.org.uk/)
Demander (http://www.demandernyc.com/)
Lincoln Theater, Raleigh

This was moved from Ritz-o Rodeo into the somewhat-more-intimate Lincoln Theater, which I'm sure is welcome news to the mulleted guy I saw at the Hold Steady show at Local 506 last year, the one standing right down front waving his longneck Bud in the air in front of the band, swinging it in time with the music so it sprinkled out onto them like holy water.

Wednesday, October 24
Boris (http://homepage1.nifty.com/boris)
Damon & Naomi (http://www.damonandnaomi.com/)
Kurihara (http://www.damonandnaomi.com/albums/kurihara.html)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Thursday, October 25
Chatham County Line (http://www.chathamcountyline.com/)
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Thursday, October 25
Celebration (http://www.beggars.com/us/news/?read=new-4ad-signing)
Dragons of Zynth (http://www.myspace.com/dragonsofzynth)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

The NYTimes's Jon Pareles blogged about Dragons of Zynth's CMJ show (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/17/dragons-of-zynth-at-union-pool/):

"Dragons of Zynth are all over the place: psychedelia tweaked by hardcore, math-rock besieged by feedback, buzzing Minimalism hijacked by power-trio riffs, a pair of singers who could croon in tandem or set up a byplay of sweetly sustained melody and wild ranting. Pere Ubu and Bad Brains are part of the mix, along with a streak of glam-rock that’s separate from fashion and some Afrobeat revved up to New York City tempos. The undercurrent was frenetic, whether or not the surface was, and the stage patter was from 1969 by way of an encryption algorithm: 'Boy beautiful you are all.'"

Thursday, October 25
Adult Film Makers (http://www.myspace.com/adultfilmmakers)
Coffin Bound
Stone Figs (http://www.myspace.com/stonefigs)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is Night One of the annual garage-rock fest known as Blackbeard's Lost Weekend. Adult Film Makers are from Raleigh, more or less, and feature Clif Mann & Rock Forbes (Bad Checks/The Ghost of Rock).

Thursday, October 25
Boyzone (http://www.myspace.com/boyszone)
The Ghost of Saturday Nite (http://www.myspace.com/theghostofsaturdaynite)
USA Baby
Suffering Bastard (http://www.myspace.com/sufferingbastardrules)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Thursday, October 25
The Whigs (http://www.thewhigs.com)
The Broken West (http://www.thebrokenwest.com/)
Wild Sweet Orange (http://www.myspace.com/wildsweetorange)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, October 25
Municipal Waste (http://www.fastcore.com/municipalwaste.htm)
Slugnut (http://www.slugnut.com)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Obstruction
Volume 11 Tavern, Raleigh

Thursday, October 25
snmnmnm (http://www.snmnmnm.com/)
Juan Prophet Organization (http://www.myspace.com/juanprophetorganization)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Friday, October 26
Jew(s) & Catholic(s) (http://www.myspace.com/jewsandcatholics)
Shipwrecker
Torch Marauder's Grappling Hook (http://home.att.net/~sandydave/torchhome.html)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

The Grappling Hook you know about: massive space-rock riffage proves to be the perfect platform for Torch's epic fantasias about dragons & horses & whatever the hell else he's singing behind that shiny mask. Shipwrecker and Jew(s) and Catholic(s) are a comparatively more subdued affair (inevitably).

Friday, October 26
Spider Bags (http://www.myspace.com/spiderbags)
The Coathangers (http://www.myspace.com/fuckthecoathangers)
Beat Beat Beat (http://www.myspace.com/beatbeatbeat)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is Night Two of Blackbeard's Lost Weekend, and the highlight for me, anyway, is Atlanta's Coathangers, an all-woman band of gtrs/drums/screechy keyboards and equally screechy yell-singing. Their two big hits: "Nestle in My Boobies" (inspirational line: "They're so comfortable!"), and "Don't Touch My Shit." Like a sped-up hetero Le Tigre with a mean[er] streak. Pure genius.

Friday, October 26
Johnette Napolitano (http://www.johnettenapolitano.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Insert joke regarding proximity to Hollywood (still) here: ______

Friday, October 26
Veer Right Young Pastor (http://www.myspace.com/veerrightyoungpastor)
Attached Hands (http://www.myspace.com/attachedhands)
The Immaculate Shark
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, October 26
Goner (http://www.gonertheband.com/)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Raleigh is the kind of town where the head-down drums/bass/keyboard hyperliterate adult-emo band Goner can book a double bill with their friends & compadres Double Negative, the gang of gen-X oldschool-Raleigh scene veterans who put together a hardcore band on a lark, and promptly laid waste to every other hardcore band in the state.
