The HawBridge School for Environmental Science and Art has launched in Saxapahaw!
Interdisciplinary Curriculum Draws on the Diverse Strengths of Local Communities
and the School’s Historic and Geographical Setting in a Restored Mill on the Haw River
The Hawbridge School of Environmental Science and Art is a public charter high school located in a restored mill in Saxapahaw, an historic mill village just outside Carrboro/Chapel Hill. Students come from a number of counties across the region but the majority are residents of Orange and Alamance counties. The school is small, with just under 100 students and a low student:teacher ratio that allows for individualization of instruction. School Principal, Dr. Marcia Huth spent the last year working with the Board of Directors of the Association for the Advancement of Education, members of the faculty, and local scientists, artists and community members, to build a specialized interdisciplinary curriculum that encourages connections among courses and draws upon the wealth of local resources in the Triangle and Triad.

The Hawbridge School has built partnerships with the Institute for the Environment at UNC-Chapel Hill, with Elon University, and with Central Carolina Community College, and has recruited local scientists, environmentalists, biologists, mathematicians, potters, textile designers, quilters, archaeologists, historians, folklore specialists, authors, poets, museum curators and even NASCAR engineers to bring the curriculum to life using real world applications. Local organic farmers teach sustainable agriculture; environmental specialists on globalism and its carbon impact design research assessments with the students; and Haw River Assembly volunteers mentor students and support student-run water monitoring initiatives in the Haw River. Fieldtrips, specialized workshops, and visiting lecturers encourage student engagement and participation in a variety of fields of study.

Dr. Huth has been thrilled with the implementation of the new program: “The response of the local academic and artistic community to the school has been amazing. We have specialists at the top of their fields coming in to work with the students, challenging and inspiring them with real world applications. As a small charter school we have the ability to reach out and take advantage of the tremendous resources this area has to offer and we are committed to building these collaborative partnerships. We see the concrete and positive effect of this interdisciplinary and community-oriented approach every day. Our students are engaged in the process of learning and this is what we strive for.”

Five three-week long interdisciplinary units constitute the core curriculum at the school. Utilizing commonalities among the goals and objectives prescribed by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study as the foundation of these units, the Hawbridge School faculty has constructed a sophisticated strategy to increase the variety of ways concepts are introduced to the students.
The five units for the 2007-2008 academic year are: Pottery, Textiles, The River, Power and Energy, and Sustainable Environment.
The Hawbridge School is a public school open to high school students from across the region.
