PAUL ORTIZ
Emancipation Betrayed
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12 @7pm
UC-Santa Cruz professor Paul Ortiz will be here to discuss his latest
work on the hidden history of black organizing and white violence in
Florida from the 1870s to 1920. The work is a major work in African
American history in the American south, and has recently become
available in paperback from UC Press. Join us for a night of
horrifying stories from a past we?re still fighting to fix.

HOLY JESUS! We?re the first to get FOUND #5! Come be the envy of all
your friends by picking up a copy of the latest Found Magazine. It?s
everything you love about Found Magazine, and probably more. Daniel?s
personal favorite:
Your employer has not indicated that shortages was
your reason for discharge. Stated you played with matches and set fire
to paper in a trash can. Wrote abscene graffiti on the paper work,
calendars, and posted signs. You engaged in hourseplay pouring
ammonia on dry ice in the back room which caused the dry ice to
explode. You twirled a broom and hit a customer in the head. (Found
by George Wietor in Grand Rapids, MI).

SEPTEMBER 19 @ 6: Surge Film Festival: MANUFACTURING CONSENT
*Manufacturing Consent*
Funny, provocative and surprisingly accessible, MANUFACTURING CONSENT
explores the political life and ideas of world-renowned linguist,
intellectual and political activist Noam Chomsky. Through a dynamic
collage of biography, archival gems, imaginative graphics and
outrageous illustrations, Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick's
award-winning documentary highlights Chomsky's probing analysis of
mass media and his critique of the forces at work behind the daily news.

DAVID JOHNSON
Voices of Sudan
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26 @ 7pm
David Johnson will present and discuss his photographs and essays from
his travels in Sudan. All -- yes, all -- sales of the book go
directly -- yes, directly -- to programs in Sudan that struggle
against oppression, hunger, and violence that threatens every member of
Sudanese society. Join us in support of this important fight.

OCTOBER 3 @ 6: Surge Film Festival
*The Guestworker*
Every year more than 10,000 Mexican men are recruited and sent by bus
to North Carolina to work on farms throughout the state as guest
workers in the H-2A program. Neither undocumented workers nor U.S.
citizens, they receive H-2A visas to work jobs that farmers say
American workers will not take. Despite the program's popularity with
farmers and farming organizations, farmworker advocates oppose the
program, claiming it does not protect the rights of farmworkers. The
Guestworker documents the stories of these men, the challenges they
face, and the impact their presence has on North Carolina farms and
communities. Through the knowing eyes of Candelario Gonzalez-Moreno, a
66-year-old worker from the state of Durango, Mexico, we see firsthand
the lives these "guestworkers" lead as they work to support their
families back in Mexico.

JONATHAN MESSINGER
Hiding Out
TUESDAY OCTOBER 16 @ 7pm
Join us for Jonathan Messinger?s debut novel from Featherproof press.
Nothing is as it seems: A jilted lover dons robot armor to win back the
heart of an ex-girlfriend; an angel loots the home of a single father; a
teenager finds the key to everlasting life in a video game. In this
much-anticipated debut, one of Chicago's most exciting young writers has
crafted playful and empathic tales of misguided lonely hearts. Sparkling
with humor and showcasing an array of styles, Hiding Out features characters
dodging consequences while trying desperately to connect.
In the fall, we?re hosting and sponsoring a series of important book
groups and studies at the bookstore. More information will come in
September, but you should email the addresses below for more
information and to RSVP for the discussion. All the book groups are at
the bookstore and all books will be available through bookstore as
well. We hope to expand these book & discussion groups, so please come
and support the pioneering steps!
