Birds of Avalon (http://www.myspace.com/birdsofavalon)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Friday, August 10
The Ts
Lonely H.
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
The Ts are good enough that Karen Mann seems to make a point of going out of her way to attend their every show. In this blog post about them, she says "The T's were just plain great. I talked to a co-worker who was there and we agreed that the only description you can give to them is "rock 'n' roll." They're not this kind of rock, or that kind of rock. They're just rock 'n' roll."

Wild Sweet Orange (http://www.myspace.com/wildsweetorange)

Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Saturday, August 11
Randy Whitt and the Grits (http://www.randywhitt.com/)
Joe Romeo (http://www.myspace.com/joeromeomusic)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Joe Romeo and his Orange County Volunteers are a rotating cast of local musical ne'er-do-wells, assembled in the service of Joe's wry, countryish (with a Muswell Hillbillies inflection) songs of modern urban misfortune.
Sunday, August 12
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham
Red Collar are a Durham band who're kinda like the unholy love-child of Ian MacKaye and Bob Seger (though now that I think about it, maybe that describes Shudder To Think . . . ). They've got punkrock politics (and that edge of desperation) mixed with bar-rock roots that show through a good bit more clearly than with your average post-Dischord band.
5:00 p.m, 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.
Sunday, August 12
Language Arts (http://www.languageartsmusic.com)
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Dasan
Bull City Headquarters, Durham
Hip-hop, plus the sometimes-goofy, sometimes-heartwrenching antifolk of the Midtown Dickens.
Sunday, August 12
Tooth
Ox vs. Thunderbird (http://myspace.com/oxvsthunderbird)
The Fucking Wrath (http://myspace.com/thefuckingwrath)
Reservoir, Carrboro
Monday, August 13
Sasquatch and the Sick-a-Billys (http://www.sickabilly.com/)
Reservoir, Carrboro
Tuesday, August 14
Bellafea (http://www.bellafea.com/)
Glass Witch (http://www.myspace.com/glasswitch)
Pterodactyl (http://myspace.com/pterodactyl)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Remember, midweek shows at the Nightlight start early-ish, with the first band onstage & playing no later than 10:00.
This is one of those mysterious once-in-a-blue-moon Bellafea shows. Back a few years ago, they took the Triangle by storm, but since then the shows have gotten fewer & further-between, and frontwoman Heather McEntire has begun focusing on her newer band Un Deux Trois. Yet anytime it seems time to write Bellfea off entirely, another show pops up.
Wednesday, August 15
Katastrophe (http://www.katastropherap.com/)
Team Gina (http://www.myspace.com/teamgina)
Katz (http://www.myspace.com/athensboyschoir)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham
Rebekah says:
"Hot outside? Well it's about to get hottter!! BCHQ presents "Heat Wave" next Wednesday, August 15th featuring Team Gina (queer electro, hip-hop duo), KATASTROPHE (from San Fran, an up-and-coming, genre-busting, emo-hop mc) and Katz from the Athens Boys Choir. Don't miss this show!! It'll be the hottest one this summer!! I saw KATASTROPHE perform with Sister Spit years ago and it totally blew me away... it can only be better!! Team Gina will make you get your dance on with a mash-up of politics, pop culture and hot pink!! Katz is the solo act that has sprung forth from the Athens Boys Choir we all know and love so well."

The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Adult Film Makers (http://www.myspace.com/adultfilmmakers)
The Heavy Pets (http://www.myspace.com/theheavypetsraleighnc)
Pour House, Raleigh
The Loners are the kings of Raleigh gtr/drums 2-piece stomp. Adult Film Makers are the Stonesy garage-rock band fronted by Bad Checks/Ghost of Rock drummer Rock Forbes. The Heavy Pets are the current project of ex-Allnight/Mercury Birds singer/guitarist Art Jackson.
Thursday, August 16
The Points (http://www.myspace.com/thepoints)
The Gondoliers (http://www.myspace.com/comeseethegondoliers)
Reservoir, Carrboro
Gondoliers are total spirit-of-'66 garage-rock mayhem/perfection, with a heavy dose of organ to skew things Just Right.
Friday, August 17
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Hi-Red Center (http://www.hiredcenter.com/)
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (http://www.theyshoothorses.org)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
The Maple Stave return to the stage for the first time in a while; they sound like what you'd expect a moshpit to sound like, if all you had was a silent video of it.
Friday, August 17
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
The Vinyl Strangers (http://myspace.com/Thevinylstrangers)
Death Becomes Even The Maiden (http://www.myspace.com/dbetm)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Friday, August 17
Dexter Romweber and the New Romans (http://www.myspace.com/dexterromweber)
Firecracker Jazz Band (http://www.myspace.com/firecrackerjazz)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
The New Romans are Dexter's large band, with multiple guitars, keyboards, horns & percussion. Every song's just as amazing as you'd imagine it would be.
Friday, August 17
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Downtown Event Center, Raleigh
Don't know how the great Greensboro band Filthybird got booked into the nearly-moribund Downtown Event Center (formerly the Martin St. Music Hall) in Raleigh, but if you're a Raleighite, don't miss this show. Filthybird are amazing, due largely to frontwoman Renee Mendoza's strong, supple voice, her electric piano, and their interplay with Brian Haran's guitar.
Friday, August 17
The Dynamite Brothers (http://www.dynamitebrothers.com/)
Gold Streets
Man in Gray
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
Saturday, August 18
The Physics of Meaning (http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/)
Buried Beds (http://www.buriedbeds.com/)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham
Saturday, August 18
Annuals (http://www.myspace.com/annuals)
The Never (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/never.html)
Auxiliary House (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/auxhouse.html)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
If you weren't paying attention, you might've missed the handover to this, the next generation of Triangle indie-rock bands. They're all more-or-less in their college years, and they favor huge melodies & equally huge bands, with everybody onstage singing and playing whatever's close-at-hand. When it's on, it's euphoric; when it's not, it's at least amusingly confusing.
Saturday, August 18
Lud (http://www.ludland.com/)
Twilighter (http://twilighter.net/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
When Lud are in their fully ramped-up show-playing mode, they're the best band in Chapel Hill. Kirk Ross's weary-but-optimistic lyrics & occasionally anthemic songwriting is perfectly augmented by the soaring guitar work of Bryon Settle, and everything's nailed down tight by Lee Waters on drums. These guys have been around long enough to be through with playing from the baser emotions; they play when they want to, because they love it.
Saturday, August 18
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Darkmeat / Vomit Lasers Family Band (http://www.myspace.com/darkmeats)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Crazed huge-band psychedelia/performance art from Athens' Dark Meat (including folks who used to be in Greensboro bands like Disband), plus the drop-dead-gorgeous Greensboro band Filthybird.
Saturday, August 18
Kapow! Music (http://kapowmusic.net)
Nathan Oliver (http://www.nathan-oliver.com)
The Private Sea (http://www.myspace.com/theprivatesea)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Reclusive dental student/indie-rocker Nathan Oliver emerges from hiding to play this show with the equally reclusive Bu Hanan band Kapow! Music.
Saturday, August 18
The Cartridge Family (http://www.cartridge-family.com/)
The Crap Rock All-Stars
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
Sunday, August 19
Jaguar Club (http://www.jaguarclubofnyc.net)
The Manics (http://www.myspace.com/themanicsrock)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Sunday, August 19
Cinemechanica (http://www.cinemechanica.com/)
The Octopus Project (http://www.theoctopusproject.com/)
Opening Flower Happy Bird (http://www.myspace.com/openingflowerhappybird)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Opening Flower Happy Bird make laptop-pop that's lately growing colder & more clinical, at least on CD. They used to be practically low-fi in their love for fuxxy guitar and sloppy live drums, but lately everything's pristine, except maybe their high, wispy boychild vocals. The old model was goofy, kinda Sebadoh-inspired boy-pop; the new model is our eventual capitulation to the machine.
Sunday, August 19
Thunderlip (http://www.thunderlip.com/)
Barbarella (www.myspace.com/barbarellach)
Reservoir, Carrboro
