Thursday, December 14
Tatsuya Nakatani (http://www.hhproduction.org/TATSUYA_NAKATANI_WORKS.html)
Crowmeat Bob presents Death Jazz
Kings, Raleigh

Tatsuya Nakatani is a free/improv percussionist from [Japan via] Pennsylvania. Over the past 10 years he's played with (among many others): William Parker, Ken Vandermark, Billy Bang, Joe McPhee, Marc Ribot, Assif Tsahar, Eugene Chadbourne, nmperign, Kyle Bruckman, Dave Dove, Daniel Carter, Peter Kowald, Peter Brotzmann, Gunda Gottschalk, Phil Durrant

He's currently on a solo tour, and Bob says he'll play a solo-percussion set, and then some short sets with different local folks.

Thursday, December 14
Monsonia (http://www.monsonia.com)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Fighting Poseidon (http://www.myspace.com/fightingposeidon)
Reservoir, Carrboro

First Triangle show for Fighting Poseidon, a new indierock band featuring Eric Mann of Kudzu Wish, plus folks from the Ladderback/Continent, plus I dunno who all else. Also the first show for the new lineup of Monsonia; after spending part of this year as a duo of Carter Browning on guitar & Andy Willard on drums, they've got a new bassist: Nick Peterson, who probably recorded half your favorite local CDs of the past few years.

The Maple Stave don't have any new members, but they do have a new-ish EP, their second, which will likely wind up placing pretty high up in your year-end top-10, should you be wise enough to purchase it.

Thursday, December 14
Health (http://www.myspace.com/healthyportions)
Dawn Chorus (http://www.myspace.com/dawnchorus)
Marijuana Wolf (http://www.myspace.com/marijuanawolf)
The Flying Anvil, Greensboro

This is a CD-release party for the excellent Greensboro band Health; check out their "Hey Hey" in the player.

Friday, December 15
Black Taj (http://www.amishrecords.com/ami021.html)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is the annual holiday party thrown by local shirt-printers The Merch. Black Taj is Dave & Steve from Polvo, plus Grant & Tom from the Jimi Hendrix Inexperience. They sound a lot like the half of Polvo's "Shapes" that sounded like a classic rock record. The show is free; Tim Ross aka DJ Twombly will also be spinning.

Friday, December 15
Armenia (http://utenti.lycos.it/bizzarreaudioarts)
Bucketovscissors
Jason Crumer (http://www.dadadrumming.org/jasoncrumer/)
Niou
Precious Holes
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight says:

Noise and other types of Noise together for fullness and clarity. Jason Crumer is the devil spawn of Eric Adams and Tina Turner. Only the harshest, shotgun rattling amp fried raw shrimp locopop noise. He recommends Armenia (from Ecuador), notable as one of the initial proponents of harsh noise from South of the Border, a leader in Latin America's noise scene. Bucketovscissors from Germany fills the disparate holes of soulless cheese with bleak distress and heartless blorg. Niou is folk noise from Zeckendorf. Precious Holes is spazz noise from Greenville, I wonder is there some Birth Raddle connection? Oh, yes there is I just heard that it's good old Jim from Greenville, we love that guy. To quote Crumer - "This is a GOOD noise line up." 10 PM $5

Friday, December 15
$2 Pistols (http://www.myspace.com/twodollarpistols)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

If you haven't seen the Pistols in a while, perhaps you've forgotten that John Howie Jr. is your favorite living country singer. Go on, get reminded.

Friday, December 15
Walter Salas-Humara (http://www.thesilos.net/)
Bickett Gallery, Raleigh

Walter Salas-Humara is the primary instigator of the rockband The Silos.

Friday, December 15
Darkmeat / Vomit Lasers Family Band (http://www.myspace.com/darkmeats)
Pearls and Brass (http://www.pearlsandbrass.com/ )
Heads on Sticks (http://www.thisisstrange.org/)
Kings, Raleigh

Dark Meat (etc) are the huge rock/psych collective from Athens (which includes a couple of ex-Greensboro type folks). They've been through town a few times this year, and seem to have left a lot of stunned expressions in their wake.

Friday, December 15
Forward, Russia! (http://www.forwardrussia.com/)
Snowden (http://www.snowden.info/)
Conshafter (http://www.conshafter.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, December 15
Electric Sunshine
Stone Fox
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Saturday, December 16
S.C.O.T.S. (http://www.scots.com/)
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Jule Brown (http://www.julebrown.org)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

If you've missed the past couple Dexter Romweber shows, you might not have gotten the word: He's playing as a duo with sister Sara Romweber (Let's Active, Snatches of Pink) behind the drumkit. Their set opening for Cat Power was one of the best Dex-related sets I've ever seen, equal parts ragged power and wicked swing.

Saturday, December 16
Peter Holsapple (http://www.thedbs.com/)
Chris Stamey (http://www.chrisstamey.com/)
Roman Candle (http://www.romancandlemusic.com/)
Caitlin Cary
Lynn Blakey
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Chris Stamey & Peter Holsapple present A Christmas CD Release & Benefit with:

Roman Candle
Caitlin Cary
Lynn Blakey
Ted Lyons
Wes Lachot
and special guests
This will be a non-smoking event. Proceeds will benefit the Interfaith Council.

Saturday, December 16
Times New Viking (http://www.timesnewviking.com/)
Psychedelic Horseshit (http://www.myspace.com/psychedelichorseshit)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight sez:

Super-secret super-awesome addition to our stellar December times. Imagine if your favorite rock band ever died, came back as talented zombies, got a four track, and did covers of their own songs with golden instruments. Now you are halfway there. Think of all the bullies and hot men and women in your life. Put them in one room and then take apart their clothing with tiny scissors. The results of your disrobing experiment are the mitochondria of romantic desperation. Now indicate the level of depth inherent in the message of tonight on a scale of 1 to 10, upon which Todd Pontius remarked clearly - "Vintage Fangoria". Both bands from Columbus. One more band from Chapel Hill or Durham, perhaps Raleigh, and the show will be complete. 10 PM $5

Saturday, December 16
Palominos (http://www.myspace.com/palominos)
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

Saturday, December 16
Black Taj (http://www.amishrecords.com/ami021.html)
The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
The Naughts
Kings, Raleigh

Hard-edged psych-rock with a slight eastern twist from Black Taj; slow-n-murky 2-piece blues stomp from the Moaners.

Monday, December 18
The Trekky Yuletide Orchestra (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/xmasfront.html)
The Mountain Goats (http://www.themountaingoats.net/)
The Strugglers (http://www.thestrugglers.org/)
Bowerbirds (http://www.bowerbirds.org)
Erie Choir (http://www.eriechoir.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

What do you call it when a dozen of the best bands in the Triangle get together to play a show at the Cradle on a Monday night, 1 week before Christmas? "Christmas at the Cradle w/ The Trekky Yuletide Orchestra," apparently:

The Mountain Goats
The Strugglers
Bellafea
Prayers And Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers
David Karsten Daniels
Bowerbirds
Ben Davis
Erie Choir
Billy Sugarfix
En Garde

I don't know any other details--I'm assuming we're not talking about full sets by all these bands, and I'm also assuming that there will be all kinds of Christmas Music being covered, so watch yr ears if you're sensitive to that kinda thing. The Trekky Yuletide Orchestra is a special Christmas version of the Trekky house band Auxiliary House, more-or-less--10-14 people from various Trekky Records bands (Mortar and Pestle, Alvarez Painting, the Never, etc) playing mostly traditional christmas songs.

Tuesday, December 19
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Pluto is a Planet (http://www.myspace.com/ibelieveplutoisaplanet)
We Landed on the Moon (http://www.welandedonthemoon.com/)
The Busy World (http://www.myspace.com/thebusyworld)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Tuesday, December 19
Dan Melchior (http://danmelchior.com/)
Conniption Fitts (http://www.myspace.com/theconniptionfitts)
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Wednesday, December 20
ECCHS Battle of the Bands
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

If you've never seen the Cat's Cradle completely packed to the gills with equal parts middle-aged parents and teens, all screaming wildly for the occasionally pretty-damn-good (or at least pretty-damn-weird) high school bands onstage, then maybe it's time you gave it a try. I'm not saying you'll enjoy it per se, at least not in the traditional "what a great rockshow" way, but it can be gratifying to see how many kids are in bands, and how many of their friends want to see them play.

And if you're a big Nth-wave ska fan, you'll be thrilled to discover just how popular it still is with The Kids.

Thursday, December 21
Sister Fanny
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Stratocruiser (http://www.stratocruisermusic.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Stratocruiser are a big happy powerpop/rock band; it's clear from the songs I've heard that they're huge Cheap Trick fans, and who can blame them?

Dexter Romweber's current Duo is himself plus his sister Sara (Let's Active, Snatches of Pink) on drums. The show I saw last month was probably the best Dex-related show I've seen in the past 10 years or more.

Friday, December 22
Jeffrey Dean Foster (http://www.jeffreydeanfoster.com/)
Lynn Blakey
The Garage, Winston-Salem

Lynn Blakey is in Tres Chicas; Jeffrey Dean Foster is an NC Music legend, due in part to his 80s band the Right Profile, and in part to his tenacity in continuing to make music although his every project seems to attract label interest and then wind up screwed in some way. This show is a benefit for AIDS service orgs in the Triad.

Friday, December 22
David Childers and the Modern Don Juans (http://www.davidchilders.com)
Joe Swank and the Zen Pirates (http://www.myspace.com/joeswankandthezenpirates)
Hideaway BBQ, Raleigh

This is a holiday party & food drive put together by the members of the Guitartown list, which is a long-running & close-knit local discussion group devoted to alt.country & whatever else. Bring canned food for the hungry (and if you show up early enough, bring yourself hungry as well, since the Hideaway isn't just a country-music club, it's also a BBQ joint).

Friday, December 22
Evil Wiener (http://www.evilwienerworld.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

It's the Evil Weiner Christmas Show. Why, it seems like it was only yesterday that Chuck was bitching about having to wear a Santa hat at last year's Evil Wiener Christmas Show. Where would the holidays be without Evil Weiner to distill them to their essence?

Friday, December 22
Health (http://www.myspace.com/healthyportions)
Auto-Passion (http://www.myspace.com/autopassion)
Sugar in the Dirt (http://www.myspace.com/sugarinthedirt)
The Werehouse, Winston-Salem

This is a CD-release party for the new Health CD, which is just out on Ernest Jenning. Haven't heard it, but if it's as good as the stuff I *have* heard, it's great.

Friday, December 22
Extreme Animals (http://www.paperrad.org/extreme/)
Boner Machine (http://www.unc.edu/~smith99/bm)
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

This is the Nth Annual Creativeimprovisationmas holiday celebration at Nightlight. They'd originally booked To Live and Shave in LA, which had everybody kinda twittering with pants-shitting anticipation, but apparently they cancelled this whole leg of their tour. Sigh.

No matter, however, as Extreme Animals and Boner Machine are both amply capable of bringing the fuX0red spectacle, and Cantwell Gomez and Jordan will hold down the actual music-making portion of the evening.

Saturday, December 23
Mount Awesome (http://www.myspace.com/mountawesomeband)
Inertia (http://www.myspace.com/iiinertia)
Hazerai (http://www.myspace.com/hazerai)
Chaz's Bull City Records, Durham

It's Chaz's Xmas Party, and he's risking it all by having a rockshow at the store, rickety floorboards and all. Hazerai sprung from the ashes of the Country Bears; the other 2 bands are from Florida.

Saturday, December 23
Noncanon (http://www.myspace.com/noncanon)
Magic Babies
Powers
Kings, Raleigh

Leave it to the rather elfin Danny Vaughn of Noncanon to give you something wonderful to do, this close to the cultural no-persons-land that is Xmas. Is it icing, or the whole cake, that his band also happens to be utterly brilliant?
