Friday, March 24
Dan Sartain ( http://www.swamirecords.com/bands/002.html ) , Jenny
Lewis with the Watson Twins (
http://www.team-love.com/bands/jenny/news.html ) , Whispertown 2000 (
http://myspace.com/Whispertown2000 )
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Friday, March 24
The New Flesh ( http://www.angelfire.com/pro/thenewflesh/ ) , Untied
States ( http://www.untiedstates.us/ )
The Werehouse, Winston-Salem

Friday, March 24
Dirty Little Heaters ( http://www.thedirtylittleheaters.com ) ,
Midtown Dickens, Future Kings of Nowhere (
http://www.thefuturekings.net/ )
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

The downtown-Durham crew piles in the van & heads over to Chapel Hill;
it'll be like hitting Joe & Jo's without having to drive to Durham
(but without the burgs-n-fries, either--and is Hectors still closed
due to their move?).

Friday, March 24
The Physics of Meaning ( http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/ )
Bickett Gallery, Raleigh

Physics of Meaning are a (mostly) Chapel Hill band, members of the Bu
Hanan collective, and thus prone to elaborate arrangements for their
songs of existential uncertainty and longing. Frontman Daniel Hart is
a violinist; his elaborate arrangements have been known to involve
cramming a string quartet onstage next to the gtrs-bass-drums, which
should be pretty entertaining in the tiny, stageless Bickett space.
Sensurround. Video at the bottom of the page [*>
http://www.trianglerock.com/video <*] here.

Friday, March 24
Elevator Action ( http://www.elevatoractionband.com/ ) , Scott
Phillips, A Rooster for the Masses (
http://www.myspace.com/aroosterforthemasses )
Kings, Raleigh

Scott Phillips is the keyboard-playing singer for Goner; he also owns
an accordion, and knows how to use it.

A Rooster for the Masses make pulsing bassy indie-pop that harkens
back to that confusing moment in the UK in the early 80s when bands
like Gang of Four were vacillating between punk and disco, and Joy
Division was evolving-via-suicide into New Order.

Elevator Action are from Charlotte, and they make lightweight
glam-punky altrock, kinda like if What Peggy Wants had survived the
grunge era & moved to Charlotte, instead of breaking up.

Friday, March 24
Dead Elephant Bicycle, Crooks and Nannies (
http://www.myspace.com/crooksandnannies )
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, March 24
Emperor X ( http://www.emperorx.net/ )
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Friday, March 24
Jule Brown ( http://www.julebrown.org ) , The Balance (
http://www.thebalanceband.com/ )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Jule Brown make droney southern backwoods blues-gospel; last time I
checked, the Balance make indie-rock-pop, except at Christmastime.

Friday, March 24
Kenny Roby's Mercy Filter ( http://www.kennyroby.com )
Raleigh Music Hall, Raleigh

Friday, March 24
Mowing Lawns ( http://www.dyss.net/mlawns.html ) , Pegasus, Living
Dead
Reservoir, Carrboro

Saturday, March 25
Street Sharks, Double Negative (
http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative ) , Holy Mountain, Government
Warning
Kings, Raleigh

The Double Negative bio on MySpace says:

"Double Negative came into existence at the start of this new year.
Justin Gray and Scott Williams had contacted Brian Walsby and Kevin
Collins to alert them to the punk rock house party scene that had been
starting up again here in Raleigh. Knowing that they would like it,
they went. Everyone liked it and the quartet were inspired to put
together a brutal sounding ensemble that required keeping things
simple and to the point and not to think about things too much. It
worked. Kevin Collins wrote some lyrics and sang over the ugly din and
everyone smiled. That also worked."

Filling in the background: Justin and Scott and Brian were in Willard
together in Raleigh in the early 90s. Scott and Kevin were in Days Of
. . . together in Raleigh in the late 80s. Brian actually listed most
of his current and/or former bands in an interview on his website, so
here it is, straight from him:

"Positive Action, Scared Straight, The Born Agains, Delusions of
Grandeur, Rob Stewart’s Stupid, Wwax, the Cornholes, Willard, Snake
Nation, Shiny Beast, Bedside Pig, the Patty Duke Syndrome,Refigerator
Heaven, The Shames, Love Limited Orchestra, Space Slut, Polvo, Daddy,
Black Taj, Siberian, Double Negative"

Kevin was also in Erectus Monotone; Justin was also in the Stepgods;
Scott was also in Daddy. I'm leaving out like 14 other bands, at
least. Crap. When am I going to get around to making the giant 3-D map
of this shit?

Saturday, March 25
L in Japanese ( http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/L_in_Japanese/ ) ,
The Nein ( http://www.thenein.com/ ) , Robo Sapien (
http://www.gorobosapien.com/ )
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Lanky Chapel Hill MC/DJ L in Japanese recently spent a year or two
living in France; I haven't yet heard how the experience may have
warped his already deeply disturbed mind.

Robo Sapien make the laptop-hip-hop/electro-disco dance-party jamz.

This is the Nein's first local show since former bassist Casey Burns
moved to Portland. I was eavesdropping on their practice a few weeks
ago, and based on the 2 minutes I heard, they've clearly gone emo. OK,
that's not true, but given how much I like their most recent EP (which
includes a blistering cover of the Zombies' "Butcher's Tale"), I'm
running out of stuff to tease them about.

Saturday, March 25
North Elementary ( http://www.northelementary.com ) , Sweater Weather
( http://www.sweater-weather.com ) , The Mason Brothers (
http://masonbrothers.org ) , Bolo
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

Saturday, March 25
The Bleeding Hearts ( http://www.thebleedinghearts.net/home.html ) ,
Watershed
Raleigh Music Hall, Raleigh

Sunday, March 26
En Garde ( http://www.myspace.com/engardemusic )
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

En Garde contains former (and the occasional current) members of
Strunken White, the Scaries, Sorry About Dresden, and a couple of
other bands whose names escape me. In their full-blown electric live
format, they make big loud emotional alt-rock-rock. For this show,
they've accepted my challenge to strip away the layers of overdriven
guitars & let us hear what's going on with the songs themselves.
(note: this is a rarity for us; we're not at all scared of a loud rock
band. But we figure that since En Garde have played approximately 400
local shows over the past 6 months, a little change might do everybody
some good). 5:00 p.m., 88.7 FM or www.wxdu.org.

Thursday, March 30
Devil Music Ensemble ( http://www.massdist.com/dme/ )
The Garage, Winston-Salem

The Devil Music Ensemble is a 21st-century-classical /art music group
from Boston, who seem to have a fondness for program-specific music,
such as live film accompaniment. Tonight they'll be providing a live
score to Robert Wiene's "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," the landmark 1919
German Expressionist film. Go see it & (a) imagine what cinema would
be like if things had continued in that direction, and (b) find out
where all those music video directors stole all their shit.

Thursday, March 30

Songs for Sixty-Five Roses ( http://www.songsforsixtyfiveroses.com/ )

Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Songs for Sixty-Five Roses is a compilation CD assembled by longtime
local rocker/producer John Plymale, to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation (John's daughter has CF). It consists of NC-connected
artists doing covers of songs by other NC-connected artists. Nearly
all of the covers feature more acoustic guitars than the originals,
and in keeping with that, this show is going to be a lot of short
acoustic sets by nearly everyone on the CD. To wit

Nikki Meets The Hibachi
Will McFarlane
Athenaeum / Mike Garrigan
Claire Holley
Greg Humphreys
Katharine Whalen
Mac McCaughan
Jason Ross
Michael Rank / Marc Smith
Chris Stamey / Roman Candle
Southern Culture On The Skids
$2 Pistols

Friday, March 31
Jule Brown ( http://www.julebrown.org )
Fuse, Chapel Hill

Fuse is where Henry's used to be; good luck with parking, now that the
gravel lot seems to be off-limits, and the UNC lot next door has a
gate on it that's pointlessly closed on weekends, and the freaking
rich-folks condos across the street have begun to mean that all the
on-street parking is occupied all the time.

Jule Brown clawed its way out from under the shadow of Jennyanykind,
shortly after the last Jennyanykind album, "Peas and Collards," was
assembled out of the unreleased pieces of the excellent Jule Brown
album "The Town, the Clowns and the Sound of Jule Brown." Suddenly
Jennyanykind ceased to exist, and Jule Brown signed to a New York
label, the fruits of which should be appearing any-damn-day now.

Friday, March 31
Centro-Matic ( http://www.centro-matic.com/ ) , The Prayers and Tears
of Arthur Digby Sellers ( http://www.prayersandtears.com/ ) , Great
Lake Swimmers ( http://www.greatlakeswimmers.com/ )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 1
The Rosebuds ( http://www.therosebuds.com/ ) , Bowerbirds (
http://www.myspace.com/bowerbirds )
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

The Bowerbirds are the new band featuring Phil Moore of Ticonderoga;
you will realize when you go to their [*>
http://www.myspace.com/bowerbirds <*] myspace page that his voice is
the voice you so loved on so many Ticonderoga songs. I'm only miffed
that I can't suss how to download those songs & listen when I'm not
plugged up.

The Rosebuds you know about, but maybe in the heat of things you
haven't thought of them in awhile. Think of them now, and remember how
much you like them (well, except you, Rick!).

Saturday, April 1
Franklin Delano ( http://www.franklindelano.org/ )
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Saturday, April 1
Nathan Asher & the Infantry ( http://www.nathanasher.com/ )
Raleigh Music Hall, Raleigh

Saturday, April 1
The Strugglers ( http://www.thestrugglers.org/ ) , Nola
Bickett Gallery, Raleigh

The Strugglers are a remarkable rockband, nowadays; there's still that
alt-country edge about them, but they've augmented it with muscle, and
funk, and a propulsive confidence that's more than justified by the
quality of the music they're making.

Saturday, April 1
Auto-Passion ( http://www.myspace.com/autopassion ) , The Sammies (
http://www.myspace.com/thesammies )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 1
Maxwell/Mosher ( http://www.maxwellmosher.com/ )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 1
Razzle ( http://www.chooglin.com ) , Kerbloki (
http://www.kerbloki.com/ ) , Ruscha
Reservoir, Carrboro

Is this a misprint? Wishful thinking? Or are Razzle, the greatest
two-guitar post-everything metal band in the history of Durham, really
having a reunion for this New Orleans benefit at Reservoir?
