. . . . maybe the Indy folks just find Blayloc to be as unbelievably sketchy as everybody else does around here . . . . have you played there before, or is tonight the first? Let us know how it goes (and whether the barman opens yr beer with his eyesocket).

Not as if there aren't 6 or 7 other great gigs tonight, but since no- one else has mentioned it here, and since it's the only one early in the evening...

Dan Bryk's Unhappy Hour
Blayloc
108 Morris St, Durham, NC 27701
6:30-8:30
Drink, eat, listen, drink. PWYC.

Part of a bi-monthly Friday Night Happy Hour singer-songwriter series at Blayloc.

For all the sturm und drang about bringing downtown Durham back to life, it would have been nice for the Indy to have gotten behind this FREE series the past month and a half (after Django launched it, that is.) There have been some pretty good local songwriters playing I had never heard before.

"Bryk has three assets that help his classic piano-man style find purchase in this cynical age: A fatally gorgeous and tactfully deployed falsetto, a minutely specific worldview, and a dash of lo-fi indie rockery to deflate accusations of retrofetish... a sparkling pop palimpsest." -Pitchfork

"Gemlike acts of idiosyncratic genius... proof of just how exaggerated reports of song's demise remain." (A-)
-Christgau

"Dan Bryk is a nerd, he's a dork, he's a geek, he's a tard. But he's also polished, a real craftsman and he's honest, and he brings out the dork in all of us. He will make you love him." -Laurie Notaro
