*TONIGHT* TUESDAY, MARCH 7 - SEEKING ACCOUNTABILITY FROM A SUPERPOWER: AGENT ORANGE, VIETNAM, AND THE COURTS @ IBOOKS, 5pm

The war in Vietnam was supposed to be over thirty years ago but for some, it has never ended. While some comparisons are being made with the war in Iraq, one difference is the fact that in Vietnam, weapons of mass destruction were used in that country for many years. One was a defoliant called “Agent Orange.” Its crippling effects endure today. Vietnam has opened up to tourists and trade. Some believe that the war is a distant memory but nothing could be further from the truth. There are three million victims who suffer ongoing battles with cancers and birth defects, and large chunks of land that are still contaminated. A new battlefield is opening up over Agent Orange and this fight’s not going to happen in Vietnam. Instead, it’s unfolding in a courtroom in New York City.

Nearly 30 years since the official end of the Vietnam war, a group of Vietnamese has started legal action in New York against the American chemical companies which manufactured the herbicide Agent Orange which was used extensively throughout the conflict. This evening come hear Constantine Kokkoris, one of the attorneys for this group, who has filed suit on behalf of the victims alleging violations of international law, including war crimes and breaches of the Geneva Convention.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8 - DR WILLIAM MANSON: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF POWER @
IBOOKS, 7pm

What can Freudian psychiatry tell us about the hidden motivations of
political leaders? The compulsive drive for power may in itself be
symptomatic of a serious personality disorder - with devastating
consequences for humanity and the world. Please join Internationalist
in welcoming psychoanalytic anthropologist Dr. William Manson as he
explains why he believes President Bush is a "psychopathic narcissist." For an alternative perspective, the psychiatrist Justin Frank's new
book 'Bush on the Couch' will also be discussed.

THURSDAY, MARCH 16 - READING: 'BIG MISTER, LITTLE MISTER, BABY SISTER' @
IBOOKS, 7pm

On March 16th Internationalist Books will welcome first-time author, and
mother of four, Renee Piccirillo as she reads from her books 'Big
Mister, Little Mister, Baby Sister.' Finally a book about nursing and a
nursing mom. As a mother, Piccirillo got tired of never having a
children's book at home that demonstrated to her older children a
nursing family like the one they knew. For mothers with older children
and a new baby, this book helps explain why mothers nurse. 'Big Mister'
also celebrates children's individuality, showing how great it is to do
things just the way you do them no matter how different it is from
others. We hope to see you, and your little ones, there!

SATURDAY, MARCH 25 - READING & DISCUSSION: 'TOGETHER WE DO GOOD WORK' @
IBOOKS, 7pm

Ibooks welcomes Sara Gomez as she discusses her travels and her book,
'Together We Do Good Work.'

APRIL 7 & 8 - CAROLINA WOMEN'S CENTER CONFERENCE -- SEXUAL TRAFFICKING:
BREAKING THE CRISIS OF SILENCE

The Carolina Women's Center is hosting a conference on the sexual
trafficking of women and children titled Sexual Trafficking: Breaking
the Crisis of Silence. The conference takes place April 7 & 8 at the
Radisson Hotel in RTP. For more information got to
http://womenscenter.unc.edu/trafficking/.

It is estimated that 600,000–800,000 people are trafficked each year.
Approximately 80 percent are women and girls, and up to 50 percent are
minors. In America, tens of thousands of foreign and native women and
children are sexually exploited every day.

This international conference on sexual trafficking, hosted by the
Carolina Women's Center and its partners, continues the fight against
commercial sexual exploitation of young women and children by raising
public awareness to the human rights violations caused by trafficking,
including its mental and physical effects on its victims. Join your
voice to the call for justice and dignity in North Carolina and
worldwide. Help stop trafficking.

***STUDENT POSTER CONTEST***
Prize money of $500, $300, or $200 if your poster is selected in a
*Student Poster Contest* sponsored by the Carolina Women's Center for a
conference on the sexual trafficking of women and children. Each year
900,000 women and children are trafficked worldwide. It is estimated
that 50,000 are trafficked annually to the US as sex workers. There is a
lack of understanding among the general public that trafficking is a
pervasive and difficult problem. The purpose of this poster is to show
in graphic design that modern-day slavery does exist and that it can be
stopped. Your challenge is to show this picture with a clear message and
in a tasteful manner that is suitable for public viewing.

*There are stringent guidelines for entering this contest.* For further
entry details and before creating your poster, contact Roi Holladay at
roiholladay at yahoo.com or 919/969.2646.
