*TONIGHT* TUESDAY, FEB. 28 - READING: REVEREND BILLY TALEN @ IBOOKS, 7pm

Next Tuesday at 7pm come hear Rev Billy Talen read from his book 'What
Should I Do if Reverend Billy is in My Store'? Reverend Billy and the
Stop Shopping Gospel Choir believe that Consumerism is overwhelming our
lives. The corporations want us to have experiences only through their
products. Our neighborhoods, "commons" places like stoops and parks and
streets and libraries, are disappearing into the corporatized world of
big boxes and chain stores. But if we "back away from the product" -
even a little bit, well then we Put The Odd Back In God! The supermodels
fly away and we're left with our original sensuality. So we are singing
and preaching for local economies and real - not mediated through
products -- experience. We like independent shops where you know the
person behind the counter or at least - you like them enough to share a
story. Remember children... Love is a Gift Economy! -- The Rev

The Church of Stop Shopping is based in New York City. We are a 501(c)
not for profit organization staffed almost entirely by volunteers (just
like I-books!). http://www.revbilly.com/

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1 - AGAINST THE GRAIN: EXPLORING GRASSROOTS AND LOCAL
MEDIA @ IBOOKS, 7pm

Join us for for this year’s first “Against the Grain: networking local
alternatives”. In the current climate of questionable democracy and
corporate dominated news, finding different and autonomous means for
creating and disseminating news has never been more critical. Join us on
March 1st at 7pm as local media-makers and activists from Triangle Free
Press, The People’s Channel, Independent Voices, Underground magazines
and publishing houses discuss the projects they are a part of. Find out
everything from the technicalities of publishing to the broader visions
and political projects and problems underpinning them.

AGAINST THE GRAIN: Networking Local Alternatives
Chapel Hill and the surrounding area are filled with organizations,
groups and businesses that are daily enacting ways of living within and
against the current system. Collective bookstores, cooperative living
communities, biofuel collectives and experiments in public television,
we are all involved—albeit differently—in projects that attempt to make
the world a better place as we get on with our daily lives and work.
Too often, however, we do so without a recognition about how many
others are out there doing amazing things, we miss out on the potential
learning and growth we could all get from one another if we told our
stories and though together about the possibilities, problems and goals
of our projects—both individually and collectively as part of a larger
movement and community.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8 - DR WILLIAM MANSON: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF POWER @
IBOOKS, 7pm

What can Freudian psychiatry tell us about the hidden motivations of
political leaders? The compulsive drive for power may in itself be
symptomatic of a serious personality disorder - with devastating
consequences for humanity and the world. Please join Internationalist
in welcoming psychoanalytic anthropologist Dr. William Manson as he
explains why he believes President Bush is a "psychopathic narcissist."
For an alternative perspective, the psychiatrist Justin Frank's new
book 'Bush on the Couch' will also be discussed.

THURSDAY, MARCH 16 - READING: 'BIG MISTER, LITTLE MISTER, BABY SISTER' @
IBOOKS, 7pm

On March 16th Internationalist Books will welcome first-time author, and
mother of four, Renee Piccirillo as she reads from her books 'Big
Mister, Little Mister, Baby Sister.' Finally a book about nursing and a
nursing mom. As a mother, Piccirillo got tired of never having a
children's book at home that demonstrated to her older children a
nursing family like the one they knew. For mothers with older children
and a new baby, this book helps explain why mothers nurse. 'Big Mister'
also celebrates children's individuality, showing how great it is to do
things just the way you do them no matter how different it is from
others. We hope to see you, and your little ones, there!

SATURDAY, MARCH 25 - READING & DISCUSSION: 'TOGETHER WE DO GOOD WORK' @
IBOOKS, 7pm

Ibooks welcomes Sara Gomez as she discusses her travels and her book,
'Together We Do Good Work.'

APRIL 7 & 8 - CAROLINA WOMEN'S CENTER CONFERENCE -- SEXUAL TRAFFICKING: BREAKING THE CRISIS OF SILENCE

The Carolina Women's Center is hosting a conference on the sexual trafficking of women and children titled Sexual Trafficking: Breaking the Crisis of Silence. The conference takes place April 7 & 8 at the Radisson Hotel in RTP. For more information got to http://womenscenter.unc.edu/trafficking/.

It is estimated that 600,000–800,000 people are trafficked each year.
Approximately 80 percent are women and girls, and up to 50 percent are
minors. In America, tens of thousands of foreign and native women and
children are sexually exploited every day.

This international conference on sexual trafficking, hosted by the Carolina Women's Center and its partners, continues the fight against commercial sexual exploitation of young women and children by raising public awareness to the human rights violations caused by trafficking, including its mental and physical effects on its victims. Join your voice to the call for justice and dignity in North Carolina and worldwide. Help stop trafficking.

***STUDENT POSTER CONTEST***
Prize money of $500, $300, or $200 if your poster is selected in a *Student Poster Contest* sponsored by the Carolina Women's Center for a conference on the sexual trafficking of women and children. Each year 900,000 women and children are trafficked worldwide. It is estimated that 50,000 are trafficked annually to the US as sex workers. There is a lack of understanding among the general public that trafficking is a pervasive and difficult problem. The purpose of this poster is to show in graphic design that modern-day slavery does exist and that it can be stopped. Your challenge is to show this picture with a clear message and in a tasteful manner that is suitable for public viewing.

*There are stringent guidelines for entering this contest.* For further entry details and before creating your poster, contact Roi Holladay at roiholladay AT yahoo.com or 919/969.2646.
