TONIGHT -- North Carolina prepares for execution #1000

Barring a court-ordered stay or clemency from NC Gov. Mike Easley, Kenneth Boyd will be executed in North Carolina on December 2, 2005, marking the gruesome milestone of the 1000th execution in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. In addition to the regular 9PM to 2:30AM vigil at Central Prison in Raleigh, there will be these additional events tonight:

9:30 PM -- a speaker's program where people from all over the country will speak out against the 1000 executions. Scheduled to speak are 2 former death row prisoners, Amnesty International, Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights, PFADP, as well as other organizers and directors from various state abolition groups.
11:00 PM -- a reading of the 1,000 names will begin, with a bell tolling following each name

SATURDAY and SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3,4 - OPEN HOUSE

Our amazing volunteers have spent hours remodeling the inside of the store -- we have many new books, new bookshelves, freshly painted walls and a new layout that gives us a little more room for events -- please come check it out! We'll have free food and drinks available from 12-8 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. At 3PM on Sunday, Lyle Estill of Piedmont Biofuels will talk about his new book, Biodiesel Power -- see below for more information.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4 - 'BIODIESEL POWER' PRESENTATION, 3PM

Join Internationalist Books in welcoming author Lyle Estill for a reading and discussion about his book 'Biodiesel Power: The passion, the people, and the politics of the next renewable fuel.'

"'Biodiesel Power' is a chronicle of this emerging industry. Tracking the people, the stories and the rapidly moving history of the biodiesel movement with wit and wisdom, authos Lyle Estill reveals the tensions among grassroota activists and their altruistic co-ops, the profit-minded commercial producers and the voices of agribusiness, and the current administration -- or "the coalition of the drilling."

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7 - BIKING FOR SUSTAINABILITY MEETING, 7PM

-------------------------------------------------------------------

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14 - READING: 'MESSAGES TO THE WORLD: THE STATEMENTS OF OSAMA BIN LADEN' BY BRUCE LAWRENCE, 7PM

Bruce Lawrence's book collects 24 newly translated public statements by Osama bin Laden. Over the last ten years, bin Laden has issued a series of carefully tailored public statements, from interviews with Western and Arabic journalists to faxes and video recordings. These texts supply evidence crucial to an understanding of the bizarre mix of Quranic scholarship, CIA training, punctual interventions in Gulf politics and messianic anti-imperialism that has formed the programmatic core of Al Qaeda.
