Thursday, November 3
Sweater Weather, Mean Reds Orchestra, Milagro Saints
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Thursday, November 3
Milemarker [http://stickfiguredistro.com/milemarker], Fin Fang Foom
[http://www.lovitt.com/artists/finfangfoom.html], Kerbloki
[http://www.kerbloki.com/]
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
Milemarker are still from Chicago, although the paper says that Dave
Laney's planning to move back here, and Ben Davis is back in the band,
so actually they're nearly half from here again. [Other paper-derived
factoid: Roby has left the band]
Fin Fang Foom make rumbling elastic music that's more about the
veering directions of the instruments than anything specific Eddie
might or might not sing along the way.
Kerbloki are "party hip-hop" of the unavoidable-Beasties-comparison
variety.

Jett Rink [http://www.jett-rink.com/], Honored Guests
[http://www.thehonoredguests.com/], Cities
[http://www.citiesmusic.com], Alex Lawhon, Sweater Weather
Local 506, Chapel Hill
This is some kind of ASCAP/MySpace showcase, which mostly means that
Alex Lawhon & Sweater Weather were picked [somehow] via cyberspace to
join the other 3 bands on the bill.
Jett Rink you know about. Cities are working on a new CD for Yep Roc;
they are the Raymond Brake of the 2005's.
Friday, November 4
Auto-Passion, Finks
[http://www.psychicrevolution.com/finkssongs.html], Bellafea
[http://www.bellafea.com/], Torch Marauder, Hotel Motel
[http://www.hot-mot.com]
The Werehouse, Winston-Salem
This is a CD-release show (one of many scheduled throughout November)
for Compulation Volume 2, which kicks every bit as much ass as Volume
1, if not moreso.
Friday, November 4
The Mountain Goats [http://www.themountaingoats.net/], Mac McCaughan,
Ivan Howard [http://www.therosebuds.com], Reid Johnson, Aimee Argote
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
If you recall the Troika Music Festival of this past summer, you might
remember that John Darnielle took sick at the last minute & thus the
Mountain Goats were unable to play. Troika promised a rain date at the
time, and now they're delivering. If for some reason you had the
presence of mind to hang onto your Troika pass, then Score! You get in
free.
It is apparently relatively safe to say, at this juncture, that Aimee
Argote's recent string of solo shows pretty much signal the demise of
des_ark. Show up & see how many boys-with-guitars it takes to come
close to challenging her dominance of the room.
p.s. It hopefully is also safe to say that the appearance of the other
solo acts does *not* herald the demise of their various respective
rockbands. Hopefully.

Malt Swagger
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Malt Swagger are a giant pulsing throbbing instrumental
thing--real-live vibraphone going head-to-head with Dave Jernigan's
Vibrolux cranked to the proverbial 10. Space music for a post-space
era.
Saturday, November 5
The Physics of Meaning [http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/],
Ticonderoga [http://www.ticonderobics.com/], Eyes to Space
[http://www.eyestospace.net/], The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby
Sellers [http://www.prayersandtears.com/]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
This is a CD-release show for the Physics of Meaning, who are a
member-band of the Bu Hanan collective. Not surprisingly [to me, at
least, at this point], the new CD has some things in common with other
recent Bu Hanan releases from the PATOADS, David Karsten Daniels, and
Kapow! Music: Lonesome/sad-boy vocals, a mix of acoustic instruments
and electronic sequenced bloops/beats/orchestral patches, and a
certain heightened sense of tension/release/drama. RIYL above, in
other words.
The new Ticonderoga CD is one of the best of 2005--casual [Pavementy,
perhaps] vocals, nervous skittish drums, suddenly-emergent strings,
wandering melodies & disappearing song-structures, all of which
somehow gel into compelling music. They pull it off live, too, which
is still more impressive when you realize they're only three guys.
Saturday, November 5
North Elementary [http://www.northelementary.com], Pleasant
[http://www.pleasantmusic.com], Venice is Sinking
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
Sunday, November 6
A Rooster for the Masses
[http://www.myspace.com/aroosterforthemasses], Sybris
[http://www.sybrismusic.com/], The Breaks
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Sunday, November 6
GoGoGo Airheart [http://www.gogogoairheart.com/], The Joggers
[http://www.thejoggers.com/], The Capulets
[http://www.unc.edu/~arclarke/the%20capulets/], The People Under the
Bridge [http://www.duckonbike.com/artistinfo.asp?artistid=378]
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
Monday, November 7
Mazarin [http://www.mazarinband.com/], The Sames
[http://www.thesames.com], Tennis and the Mennonites
[http://www.tennisandthemennonites.com]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
The Sames buzz and hum and overflow all over the stage & somehow
between the PA and your ears, all that noisewash gets converted into
brilliant popsongs.
Tennis and the Mennonites are nervous in the classic artstudent way,
all stutter & hiccup and exaggerated arm-movements.
Tuesday, November 8
Little Brazil, Statistics, Alvarez Painting
[http://www.trekkyrecords.com/alva/index.html], Shane Kelly
[http://www.myspace.com/shanekelly]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Wednesday, November 9
King Coleman & the Creepy Ts, Dexter Romweber
[http://www.dexterromweber.com]
Kings, Raleigh
Wednesday, November 9
Jackie O Pillbox [http://www.jackieopillbox.com/]
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Wednesday, November 9
Dios Malos [http://www.wearedios.com/], Swords

Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Wednesday, November 9
Midtown Dickens
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Wednesday, November 9
Pawnshop Ruby, Roh Delikat [http://www.rohdelikat.com/], Kapow! Music
[http://kapowmusic.net]
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
Thursday, November 10
Pleasant [http://www.pleasantmusic.com], Audubon Park
[http://audubonpark.blogspot.com], Second Story Man
[http://www.secondstoryman.com], Roh Delikat
[http://www.rohdelikat.com/]
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
Audubon Park's set at the Troika Music Festival was the highlight (for
me) of the whole damn multi-day festival. When they're firing on [all
| at least 80% of] their cylinders, they are a nigh-unstoppable
demented machine of sloppy near-fall-apart spazzle indierock pop
genius. Or something.
Pleasant are slower & less-freaky than they were when they were
younger. Is maturity a good thing? Have you watched reality TV
lately?
