Maybe you've seen this as I think this has been on the stands already,
but it just showed up in my mailbox. Anyway, there is an awesome full
page (and full color!) piece on Des Ark. Plus, there is a capsule
about 90's Chapel Hill scene as the cover story is about 80's
Minneapolis scene with Husker Du (and yes, 506 would love to host
reunions by Erectus Monotone, Small, Finger, et al!) Apparently,
according to the cover, there is something on Ben Folds too - but I've
yet to actually come across that.
Oddly enough, the back cover is a full page ad for Merge act Spoon.
Gotta say, and I've been saying this for years, that most music
advertising is pretty uninformative with the Spoon ad being a perfect
example. It looks beautiful (basically the album artwork) but only
informs those in the know - and since the band has sold a shitload of
CDs already, I think they already know. Like most music ads, there is
no info about why someone who hasn't actually heard Spoon should hear
them. And unfortunately, even within the confines of Magnets
circulation, there are probably more of those people.
With that said, Merge does redeem itsolf with their ad for Teenage
Fanclub and Rosebuds which does include some quotes so you get an idea
of the music. But gotta get props to Yep Roc for their two page
spread that covers more bands AND offers more insight.
Okay, soapbox now returned to closed....glenn
