Friday, June 17
Jule Brown [http://www.julebrown.org]
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, June 17
The Sames [http://www.thesames.com], Schooner
[http://www.schoonermusic.com], The People Under the Bridge
[http://www.duckonbike.com/artistinfo.asp?artistid=378], The Close
[http://www.thecloserocks.com]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Schooner are from Raleigh, and they make a sort of lopey, doe-eyed
southern croon-pop, except for when they occasionally rock out
mightily. They've been talking a lot of talk about having a lot of
guest musicians for this show.

The Sames strum quickly better than anyone else I've ever heard. They
also always say the nicest things about the bands they're playing
with. Like the Close, for instance, who are from Atlanta, and who
recently appeared on a split 7" with the Rosebuds, which is a brave
thing to do, given that everybody's gonna play the Rosebuds side
repeatedly & never get around to the other side.

Friday, June 17
A Rooster for the Masses
[http://www.myspace.com/aroosterforthemasses], Stephanie's Id
[http://www.stephaniesid.com], The Sammies
Kings, Raleigh

Saturday, June 18
Alejandro Escovedo [http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/], Caitlin Cary,
Thad Cockrell
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Caitlin & Thad have a new album of duets, called "Begonias," and this
is a release party for it. It is beautiful.

Saturday, June 18
Receptors [http://receptorsmusic.com], Remora
[http://www.silbermedia.com/remora/], Torch Marauder, Clang Quartet
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Remora is/are obscure/mysterious guitar-drone experimentalism from
Raleigh, although their most recent release is much more
song-structured & even has some wimpy indie-rocker singing.

Clang Quartet beats the living daylights out of a whole variety of
different objects, both household and percussion-specific, all for the
greater glory of Christ.

Torch Marauder is blue, wears a large black hooded cape, and sings
songs of happiness, woe, TV & the emergency room, and probably
breakfast cereal (if he doesn't, he should). And smiting.

Saturday, June 18
The Nein [http://www.thenein.com/], Pykrete
[http://www.bullfightparty.org/cirox/pykrete], Bellafea
[http://www.bellafea.com/]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Nein have just returned from a triumphant tour around the country,
including (I'm told) some camping in Utah. Be sure to volunteer to
check them for ticks. Oh yes: they will be bringing the
ever-so-slightly industrial-tinged wee-bit-angsty indie-rock with
samples & other scree-noise supplied by paper-cutout genius Dale
Flattum.

Speaking of samples & scree-noise, Chuck Johnson's solo electronic
project Pykrete (go ahead, Google it; learn all about the special
sawdusty ice) will compel you to pummel your own brain into
submission.

Bellafea might not do much pummelling, but Heather's yodel can
occasionally be icepick-intense, and her dancing's pretty fly too.

Sunday, June 19
The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers
[http://www.prayersandtears.com/]
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers are the brainchild of
one Perry Wright, who clearly has an ear for meter that he tries to
apply in every area of his band. Their latest CD is entitled "The
Mother of Love Emulates the Shapes of Cynthia," and it's a sprawling
examination of disconnection from love, both earthly & divine. It
travels back and forth from string-quartet settings to full-on
distorto guitar symponics, and I'm curious to see how many players
Perry's going to bring with him to the radio, and how it'll translate
to playing live in that tiny tiny room. Tune in & find out: 5:00 p.m.
88.7 FM and/or www.wxdu.org.

Sunday, June 19
Velorum [http://www.velorum.net/], Monsonia [http://www.monsonia.com]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Monsonia are a Slinty young three-piece from Chapel Hill with all the
tight gtr/bass/drums dynamics & strained vocals that go along with
that. They promise an early start/end time so you can make that
annoying Sunday-night curfew.

Monday, June 20
Mary Timony [http://www.matadorrecords.com/mary_timony/], Medications,
Bellafea [http://www.bellafea.com/]
Kings, Raleigh

Mary Timony used to be in Helium, although maybe at this point she's
at least as well-known solo as Helium were, so it's no longer
necessary to say that. I dunno.

Bellafea are from Wilmington via Chapel Hill, and they make weirdly
skittering gtr-drums duo-rock with odd breakdowns and a variety of
vocal tricks.

Monday, June 20
Rogue Wave [http://www.roguewavemusic.com/], Helio Sequence
[http://www.theheliosequence.com/], Sam Champion
[http://www.samchampion.com/]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 22
Iron and Wine [http://www.ironandwine.com], Band of Horses
[http://bandofhorses.com/]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Wednesday, June 22
Gang Gang Dance
[http://www.thesocialregistry.com/artist_pages/ggd.html], Bloodlines,
Boner Machine
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, June 23
Tennis and the Mennonites [http://www.tennisandthemennonites.com],
Little Light [http://www.myspace.com/littlelight], Oh Chemists,
Mystechs [http://www.mystechs.com/]
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tennis and the Mennonites are fronted by a guy named Jerstin Crosby,
who possesses some level of demented lyrical genius, and a pleasantly
weird hiccuppy delivery to match. He's also a visual artist; you can
see his fur-lined wheelbarrow (as well as T&theMs bassist Maria
Albani's baby-head xerox collage-art) at Wootini at the moment.

But don't let that thought distract you from this show; fur-lined
wheelbarrows are nice, but Tennis and the Mennonites are nicer, in a
doubletime-drums, everybody sings in high-pitched unison kind of way.

Friday, June 24
The Spinns [http://www.thespinns.freeservers.com/], New Town Drunks
[http://www.thirdmind.org/featured_artists/NTD/index.html]
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, June 25
The Spinns [http://www.thespinns.freeservers.com/], S.C.O.T.S.
[http://www.scots.com/], Chrome Plated Apostles
[http://www.demonbeach.com], Snatches of Pink
[http://www.snatchesofpink.com/], New Grenada
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a big (starts at 6:00 and goes all night) benefit for longtime
local soundman/recordist Dave Schmitt, who (like nearly everybody else
who works in the local-music economy) has no health insurance & is
looking at some major dental work bills. The lineup is as follows:

6pm New Town Drunks
7pm New Grenada
8pm Snatches Of Pink
9pm Chrome Plated Apostles
10pm Terry Anderson's Olympic Ass Kicking Team
11pm Southern Culture On The Skids
12am The Meek
1am The Spinns

Saturday, June 25
The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers
[http://www.prayersandtears.com/], The Strugglers
[http://www.thestrugglers.org/], Virginia Reel
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Strugglers have a wonderful new album in the can; it's called "You
Win" and it's easily the best thing they've done. Won't be released
here until October sometime, however, so in the meantime you owe it to
yourself to see/hear them play some of it live.

Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers make something akin to
"chamber-emo," but I'm already embarrassed for having said that, so
I'll cut my losses & not continue.
