The Triangle covers a pretty wide area

and there's really not much "typical"

in the methods or amounts of payments

to bands. Large clubs will usually pay

a straight fee, but in small clubs like

some in Chapel Hill,

various arrangements are possible (straight

fee and/or percentage of door proceeds, or

even the band plays free for the exposure;

some clubs have a regular soundman whose pay

comes out of the band's fee). In my experience,

private functions pay better than clubs on

average. A three piece group may be happy with

$300-400 or even less. A few well established

large groups will not consider anything less

than $2000-3000. Free drinks, food, and

hotel rooms are sometimes part of the deal.

Yes, an agent or successful album will add

a few bucks to the cost, but agents often

provide a better quality of bands(they have to).

It's like any business. The band wants as much

as it can get, and the guy paying the bills

wants to keep the cost down. In most cases,

everything is negotiable.

Mike

I do not know if this is impolite as a subject, but I have wonderedwhat are
the typical rates of payment for bands in the Triangle? Is it X?Is it X +
percent of gate?If they have an album or agent, is it more?Different rates
between clubs, weddings, and parties? I don't mean to put exact monetary
values on artistic works, but Idon't want to be insulting if I offered too
little money for a party.Thanks,thom-- Less talk. More monkey.
