Strunken White [http://www.route14.com/bands/strunk.htm], Vecordia,
The Droogies, Makeshift
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Couple of years ago, Strunken White & Vecordia split up & various
members formed a new band called io and promptly headed for the West
Coast to make their fortunes on the frontier, or something like that.
They're on a summer vacation of sorts, home visiting family or
whatnot, and just-for-the-hell-of-it as well as to mark the passing of
Go, they've gotten the old bands back together for this one-off
reunion show.

Strunken White, if you can remember that far back, were the highschool
wunderkind band whose layered dual-guitar rock sounded like what you'd
get if a bunch of Jordan High School kids grew up listening to equal
parts Polvo, classic rock and metal/hardcore. There was nothing quite
like 'em at the time & there sure hasn't been since.

Roxotica, Fashion Design, Hotel Motel
Ooh La Latte, Durham

Here's what tireless Ms. Films impresario Niku Arbabi sent along about
this first Chicks Rock show:

don't forget! roxotica, hotel motel, fashion design will play the
first chicks rock show this saturday at ooh la latte
([http://www.oohlalatte.com] www.oohlalatte.com for directions). show
start time is 9pm, all ages are welcome.

pick up your frequent chick rocker card to get a free ms. films shirt,
and the chicks rock zine (a fat quartersize deal with 90 1/4 pages of
fun band interviews, diy stuff, rock camp for girls, art cars, films,
zines, etc), buttons, and cute (I mean badass) hand silkscreened
attire.

Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

CD-release for the new North Elementary CD, "Lose Your Favorite
Things." Not a CD release for a new Work Clothes CD, however, so
you'll just have to arrive early & actually shut up & listen to the
band.

Kings, Raleigh

Sunday, July 25
JJ Paradise Player's Club [http://www.jjppc.com/], LKN
[http://www.greydayproductions.com/bands/lkn.html], Sentinel
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sentinel are from Chapel Hill & they bring the futuristic alienated
post-Terminator grindy metalcore. LKN are the initials of Lauren K.
Newman, who plays guitar & sings. The MP3 I downloaded is a loud
rocksong with twisty staccato postpunk verses & squall-boomy choruses
& appealingly hoarse vocals. Somewhere between Jesus Lizard & Helmet
but without so many tedious fucking boys in the band.

Speaking of boys, JJ Paradise Player's Club is a NYC-based
metallo-hardcore outfit with an ex-member of Unsane & their press
photos are just so quintessentially NYC metallo-hardcore that it'd be
hard not to laugh at even if I actually cared to try to avoid
laughing.

Monday, July 26

Wednesday, July 28
Jule Brown [http://www.unc.edu/~holland3/jbrown.htm], Django Haskins
[http://www.djangohaskins.com/]
The Cave, Chapel Hill

The early show (7:00 p.m.) features Jennyanykind spinoff
country-blues-drone psych band Jule Brown. The late show (10:00)
features local smarty-pop singer/songwriter Django Haskins, who never
met a metaphor he didn't like.

Wednesday, July 28
Lou Barlow [http://www.loobiecore.com/], Arcade Fire
[http://www.arcadefire.com/]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This show is free. There was a time when Lou Barlow playing a free
solo show with the latest-and-greatest Canadian Merge signees would
have meant you'd be shit outta luck if you showed up any later than 5
minutes after the doors opened. Now may still be that time; I honestly
have no idea. I *am* willing to bet that if the club winds up
packed-to-the-gills, it'll be 40% 90s-era ex-pats back in town for a
little postcollegiate nostalgia trip. And all I have to say is
welcome, glad to see you, all the best restaurants are different now
than when you lived here, and we may or may not be lying when we tell
you what they are now.

Wednesday, July 28
Jesse Malin [http://www.jessemalin.com/], The Damnwells
[http://www.thedamnwells.com/]
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Thursday, July 29 - Saturday, July 31
Merge Records 15th Anniversary
[http://www.mergerecords.com/special.php]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Given that this whole shebang is sold-out, I don't really feel the
need to go into great detail about the lineup, so I'll instead take a
couple of sentences to add my voice to the chorus of congratulations.
Believe me, I tried like hell to think of something snarky &
undercutting to say, but honestly--and it surely pains me to admit
it--I just love the fuckers too damn much.

Anyway, it would've taken too much energy to come up with an elaborate
lie about Merge using strongarm tactics to drive Jesus Christ out of
business & steal all their best bands, and if there's one thing I've
learned in the 12 years I've lived here, it's not to try too hard.
There you have it, the Merge Legacy in a nutshell. Insert semi-inside
joke about Mac's bathtub farts here.

Thursday, July 29
Starlite Desperation [http://www.starlitedesperation.com/]
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Thursday, July 29
Black Socks, Phon, Art Lord and the Self Portraits, Ticonderoga
[http://www.ticonderobics.com/]
Kings, Raleigh

Friday, July 30
Razzle [http://www.chooglin.com], Roxotica, Natasha
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Razzle drummer Dave Bjorkback sent out this bittersweet farewell
email:

All three of these bands are breaking up, and Go! is closing down!

Natasha is a great rocking band, comprised of some fine young
ladies....."how young?" you ask, well, they're splitting up because
some of the members are going on to college.

Roxotica is also comprised of some fine young ladies, who've not only
rocked with Razzle before, but gone head to head with us in several
battle of the bands/sexes. Two of these gals are tying the knot soon,
and one is currently going to school in Atlanta. I don't know if any
of that has to do with their break up, but apparently this is gonna be
their last show.

Razzle has decided to throw in the towel, but not without one last
blowout, and one last recording. Pox World Empire's Zeno and Mark have
decided to put out the final Razzle record: All Those Wasted (Y)ears.
It has seven songs, it was recorded at Pox studio and you get a copy
of it with your $8 cover charge.

Razzle will be on WXYC's Backyard BBQ this Sunday, July 25 at 8pm.
We'll be talking about this last show, this last record and how much
we hate each other. That's right, we're gonna spill all the dirt right
on the air. People got questions, we'll supply the answers. Host Chris
Toenes will be manning the censor button, coz the trash talking's
gonna get ugly. You can listen on line at [http://www.wxyc.org]
www.wxyc.org

And Finally GO! will be closing down just two weeks after this show.
This night will mark the end of an era in rock music. Three great
bands calling it quits, and one fantastic rock club/ rehearsal space
closing its doors. Go! has been Razzle's home for 3 years. All the
folks who work there are really great people, and we wish them all the
best.

Sunday, August 1
The Clientele [http://www.mergerecords.com], David Kilgour
[http://www.mergerecords.com/bands/kilgour/bio.html], Lambchop
[http://www.landlocked.net/lambchop/]
Carolina Theatre, Durham

This is the final night of the Merge 15th-Anniversary spectacular, and
since it's being held in the mammoth Fletcher Hall of the Carolina
Theatre in Durham (and since it's $19, I guess), it's not yet sold
out.

I'm told that Lambchop are bringing the full umpty-zillion-piece
ensemble, including string section, and that alone would be worth at
least $15, so assuming you're willing to pay $4 to see one of the
towering figures of 90s New Zealand pop, here from all the way round
the other side of the world, then you get The Clientele for free.
