Duke Park area, with bluebird house, but no bluebirds. Even after I pulled
out the stick that was in the entryway.

just wondering if anyone's got bluebirds nesting yet. i have one nest
at home (near east campus) in a house i put up in february, but not
enough of an expert to know if it's a bluebird's nest yet. may be
chickadees based on what i've seen in the vicinity.

anyone else in durham got bluebird houses up and any activity?

i have a b.bird house at work too, and have seen one bluebird, but no
nest there as of yet.

Oh, nuts.

I saw the Dead Milkmen on my 16th birthday. The year was 1988, and
they were playing at The Lost Horizon in Syracuse, N.Y...

Mojo Nixon opened, and I if I recall correctly, this show came just
after he split with Skid Roper. Mojo spent most of the gig bitching
about

what a jerk Skid was, how he had majorly screwed Mojo over, and Mojo's
belief that there was a red-hot corner of hell reserved for Skid,

etc., etc. Even as a dumb 16 year old I recognized how pitiful his
viciousness was.

At any rate, it can be fairly stated that I wasn't interested in the
opening act. I was Sweet 16 and this was the first time I had ever
used

my new fake ID (the best birthday prezzie I received that year!) to
get into a show. And that show was the Dead Milkmen, fer Chrissakes!
Mojo

Nixon, in my 16 year old opinion, seemed pretty much like a wanker, so
I turned my attention towards the bar and its forbidden wonders.

And damn! And wouldn't ya know it! When I approached the bartender he
winked and served my underage self as coolly as if I were a rock
star's

daughter. He hardly glanced at the fake ID I was so proud of. (That
experience was one of the first times I realized that young females

sometimes have power)

"So fuck this opening band", I thought.

Sitting there on my first barstool sucking down the first of many
drinks I would in my life drink, I felt more drunk on power than I did
on

that pitiful whiskey sour. I felt like I was getting away with
something until I caught the bartender trying to casually look down
the front

of my blouse. It was at this moment that I first realized that women
have power... like, serious power.

While I was proccessing this new concept a Scruffy Punk Mohawk Dude
slid onto the barstool next to me and hollered for a beer. He looked
to

me like every guy my parents had ever warned me about. I was
immediately captivated and high on being female. I turned toward him.

"Hi", I said, attempting to be casual.

He studied me.

"So, hey, dude... you wanna go make out?"

I blushed and to my horror I began to stutter. Very uncool.

"E-e-eh.... S-s-sorry... G-g-gotta meet my f-f-friend."

I fled. Holed up in the ladies room for a good 15 minutes. The friend
I had come with talked me down. She reassured and poked gentle fun at

me until I was able to laugh at myself. I decided that I couldn't take
myself too seriously and that I owed the fellow an apology. Went out

to apologize. Slid onto the barstool next to Scruffy Punk Mohawk Dude
and took a deep breath.

"Hey, man, I just wanted to say I'm sorry..."

"It's O.K.," he said. "But I can't really talk now. Gotta go play."

He looked at me really kindly and smiled.

And that was my experience with Dave Blood, RIP.

Oh and P.S.... The Dead Milkmen freeking rawked that night. I've seen
them live 3 times and they never failed to put on an awesome show.
