See below for all the hubbub and dates for this year's Chadfest, which
features two stops in the Triangle (1/16 at Bickett Gallery in Raleigh
and 1/22 at NightLight) and plenty more around the state.

Sorry if this doesn't format well at your end.

THE 2004 NORTH CAROLINA CHADFEST IS ON !

EIGHT DIFFERENT CONCERTS CELEBRATING DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF CHADBOURNE'S
MUSIC, FROM INSECT AND WESTERN TO SHOCKABILLY TO NEW DIRECTIONS IN
APPALACHIAN MUSIC

SPECIAL GUEST FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC:
MARTIN KLAPPER
(featured with Ghost in the Machine)

As usual, these events are produced on an almost non-existent budget, so
don't expect glitzy production values. Do expect some of the most
original and unique music you have ever heard, touching on a variety of
genres including jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, rock and roll and
political satire.

Many aspects of Chadbourne's career will be presented; the performers
include musicians that have worked with him over the last three decades
as well as talented players that have only recently come into the orbit
of this somewhat out of control planet. Many of the performers come
from North Carolina, but the cast at some events includes master
improviser Martin Klapper, from the Czech Republic and now a citizen of
Denmark. Other musicians featured have only recently moved to North
Carolina, such as famed drummer Jeff Sipe, a former member of the
Aquarium Rescue Unit with Colonel Bruce Hampton (Ret.) and currently
playing with the Susan Tedeschi Band. Long associated with the Atlanta
music scene, Sipe moved to Brevard, North Carolina this year and has
become involved in a new version of the Chadbournes country ensemble
called The Chadbournes' Apartment Q-258. Sipes for many years performed
under the pseudonym of Apartment Q-258, so the use of the nickname
within the bandname should clue audience members into the drummer's
heavy involvement with the latest version of on-going country and
western ensemble project that has been active in one way or another
since the early '80s. Other former members of The Chadbournes include
John Zorn, Kramer , the late Tom Cora and drummer David Licht.

The Chadbournes, a combo of varying sizes, performs country and
western, oldtime music, bluegrass and original songs by Chadbourne in a
style that has been described as "left wing country." It represents
only one facet of a career that also includes the creation of an
extended work entitled "Insect and Western." This is music with roots -
or perhaps bugs is more accurate - in both classical and avant garde
music, but is really a part of neither. The "Insect and Western"
repertoire includes compositions such as The Cricket In My Life, a piece
for oboe soloist and ensemble, which was premiered in a series of
performances in Switzerland and Holland in the mid '90s. The January,
2004, performances will be the first time the piece has been played
since then and will feature the original oboe soloist, Carrie Shull.

The festival will also feature a tribute to jazz composer Thelonious
Monk, a reunion of the Chadbourne Baptist Church, several duos with
Chadbourne and drummers, a continuation of the New Directions in
Appalachian Music project featuring Greensboro string player Scott
Manring and other events: please consult the program for complete
information.
