Hi friends 👋🏾

The Arab world has been my focus for the last two weeks. I've spent time in conversations with Razan Al-Hadid from CC Jordan and Eman Jaradat who's based in Tunisia. In our conversations we explored the dynamics of the Arab World and shared ideas of how to grow the CC movement there.

Currently, CC has an active presence in 4 countries in the region: Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia. There's potential to reach 19 countries.

One of the interesting things I learned is the Arab World community has a strong presence in academics but this hasn't always been the case. In past years, a lot of the work around CC Arab World centred around civil society, artists and activists. (That's the sense I got when I read 'The Power of Open' years ago). Mohamed Najem from Beirut, Lebanon has suggested to me that the Arab World should head back in that direction as part of a wider strategy to grow the movement.

Next week, at the CC Summit, Razan and Eman will be hosting the 'Faces of the Commons in the Arab World' session with an aim, in part, to figure out how to engage people and spread the movement. I'll be certain to share learnings from the session with you all and work with friends and leaders in the Arab World to meet their goals.

Til' next Friday y'all!

Kind Regards,

Simeon Oriko
