Subject: Fellowships available for African students

Dear Sir/Madam,

We would like to bring our organization to your attention, The World Academy of Sciences, (TWAS) - for the advancement of science in developing countries. We currently have over 500 fellowships available for scientists from developing countries to go to certain developing countries.
The call for applications is currently open and all new application forms and guidelines, together with detailed information on the Fellowships Programme, are available on our website (http://twas.ictp.it/prog/exchange/fells/fells-overview <cid:part1.05020100.05020503@twas.org>).

For complete information on the TWAS Fellowship opportunities in the Natural Sciences, please visit our website. In this regard, TWAS has initiated various new fellowship programmes for PhD, Postdoctoral and Advanced Research grants together with various countries in the South, including Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Thailand and Kenya. The fellowships allow scientists from developing countries to study or do research in other developing countries and then to return home to continue their careers. Please note that most of the fellowships are tenable at specific institutions in these countries.

It is important to note that applicants cannot apply for fellowships tenable in their home country e.g. an Indian applicant applying for a fellowship tenable in India will be considered ineligible as will applicants already in the host country or having temporary or permanent residence in the host country or be living in a developed country. Furthermore, do note that the minimum requirement for our PhD programmes is an MSc and a PhD for our postdoctoral programmes.  There are no PhDs via correspondence available, but there are both FULL-TIME and SANDWICH PhD fellowships available in some of our programmes.

It is up to the applicant to choose the best suited fellowship programme and after checking that they fulfill ALL the eligibility criteria of the chosen programme they must obtain preliminary acceptance from an eligible institution.  It is recommended that they contact potential supervisors in one or more eligible institutions and that they send them a copy of their CV as well as a proposed research plan in order to obtain preliminary acceptance there. Only once they have received preliminary acceptance should they submit the application form, acceptance letter and all other required enclosures as indicated on the application forms.  This may be done via e-mail, fax or by post for most programmes.

Please note that CNPq in Brazil is at present is the only programme where the application should be submitted via their online portal (details are all on our website under CNPq).

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have further queries.

With kind regards
