Some surprising and slightly worrying news taken from industry magazine, Five Eight's daily bulletin:
A new consumer study conducted by the BPI/YouGov finds that 62% of consumers feel the copyright period for sound recordings in the UK should be extended from the current 50 years to 95 years (to bring it in line with the US). For 18-29-year-olds, the level of support for a copyright extension rises to 70%. Only 20% of the 2,034 people polled were opposed to an extension in the copyright term while 18% were unsure. The BPI is hoping that these findings will help the music industry's case in the Gowers Review of intellectual property in the UK. As we argued in the May issue of Five Eight, any changes in the copyright term must be accompanied with a set of new provisions for both recording artists and music consumers:
