FACT's language and approach to the issue of copyright is nothing short of disgusting.

They have even gone as far as linking piracy to terrorism in their extreme attempts to reframe the debate on digital copyright from one of enlightened possibilities of sharing and remixing culture to that of arguments linked to 'terrible crimes'.

See http://www.piracyisacrime.com/full/IPAC_terror_Is.JPG

They are fighting hard to reconfigure 'copying' as a crime by using language linking it to:

Exploitation of Vulnerable Persons
Drugs
Money Laundering
Forgery
Immigration Crime
Pornography
People Trafficking
Paedophilia
Offensive Weapons
Firearms
Cigarette and Alcohol Smuggling
People Trafficking
and just in case that isn't bad enough they add the catch all 'Other Piracy'

(source: http://www.fact-uk.org.uk/general%20pdfs/fact%20news%20letter %20Nov%202004.pdf )

I really hope that anybody from Free Culture or Creative Commons who is thinking about going along will raise these issues of exaggeration and distortion of facts (as it were) by this organisation.

Dear all,

For anyone in Edinburgh tomorrow:

"Why should you care about film and video piracy if you can get a DVD
cheaper than the retail price? Film piracy is theft. Black market DVDs are
not just terrible quality but deprive the filmmakers of millions in income
each year. And unauthorised downloading and file sharing of films is
illegal. Last year the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) confiscated
almost 3 million pirate DVDs. Why should you care? Come and talk with the
industry experts about film piracy can and see a popular feature film which
looks so much better on the big screen than on any pirate DVD or download!
Hosted by a special guest presenter - details online."
