Hi Neil,

Unfortunately, I will be away in France during that week that you will be here. But late April sounds good as it would give more time to set something up. Perhaps in combination with Creative Friends, CC and other interested parties? I might be able to sort something out down here at Sussex University for the symposium – Brighton is nice and by the sea ;-) I'll have a chat with some people.

We are planning a copyleft release this year as a compilation of top stuff on LOCA records, as well as some new bands. It will be a CD album and distributed world-wide, maybe we can work together or talk about this later too?

The Hope & Anchor is my old local, by the way, and usually gets a good crowd.

Cheers

David

David,

Great to hear from you - I went to LOCA's website yesterday looking
for your contact and couldn't find it, and I know we've corresponded
before (talked about the split single, remember?) but I could not find
your e-mail for the life o' me.

A Symposium is exactly what's needed. I've got a meeting planned for
March 20th with John Buckman from Magnatune as well; any suggestions
as to when you'd like to meet? Where shall we plan the Symposium?

I will be in the UK from March 17-21st (playing an acoustic set at the
Hope & Anchor on the 20th), and then back again in late April and will
be somewhat London based for the Summer, barring time spent touring.

It would be good for us as labels to have some common position in order
to present the other side of the argument (for instance, Fran Nevrkla,
CEO PPL Ltd: Copyright seems under attack because it 'stands in the
way'! 'Freedom' has come to mean 'freedom to plagiarise', as a loose
coalition of academics and users of creative material try to undervalue
creativity by alleging that since 'there is nothing new under the
sun', nothing needs to be protected any more. What a nihilistic and
insulting view of creativity! )

It would be good to meet with you and the other people involved in
copyleft (e.g. Remix reading, Creative Friends) to discuss the
practical use of CC licenses.

Maybe we could try to organise a symposium to discuss these issues
nearer the date?

Best regards

David

Greetings all,

I will be relocating from Toronto to the UK for a few weeks here and
there throughout the spring and summer. As some of you already know,
our transantlantic label Fading Ways (Canada-UK) has been one of the
first music labels to utilize CC licenses, and I am looking to delve
deeper into the PRS/PPL contracts in the UK. It may be that they will
have to be challenged in court; I am looking for feedback from CC's UK
community with regards to this issue, and will be available to meet in
person with you in the coming months.

I was an invited speaker recently at a UofToronto Law School
conference on copyright ("Sound Bytes Sound Rights") and have a keen
interest in lobbying for more balanced copyright laws and a fairer
music industry on both sides of the pond.

It is clear to me from my participation at the Sound Bytes Sound
Rights conference that this issue divides people largely between age
groups, and isn't really about copyright as much as it is about a
monopoly (the major label cartel) protecting itself from new indie
competition that has been strengthened by the internet and p2p
networks. It is very unfortunate that more indie musicians and record
labels have been so slow on the uptake, and that organizations like
AIM (Association of Independent Music) toe the major-label party line
instead of being what they claim to be:

"AIM's work is as innovative as our members' music. This ranges from
trailblazing new media licensing deals and lobbying on all fronts, to
leveraging collective strength to create new marketing and
international initiatives."

There is nothing innovative in following conservative dinosaurs... I
look forward to spending more time in the UK this year.

Neil
