Thanks Richard,

The sooner an open accessible link is available, the better in my view. Working "behind closed doors" closes opportunities to address one of the major challenges experienced by the large open textbook initiatives, namely adoption.

The OER adoption challenge is clearly signalled in the William and Flora Hewlett Whitepaper on OER.  We have lots of open textbooks, but sadly they're not being used widely in the formal sector.

Not sure how we resolve this challenge or achieve the cultural shift necessary for the adoption of open education approaches -- however, the more open the process, the greater the likelihood of success.

Hi Wayne,

I’ve copied this to Erika.  They were working on it in draft form ‘behind closed doors’ (using Wordpress).  And there’ll be a process of post-editing now.  The goal for the weekend was to sprint-write as much content as possible.  We’ll be sure to publicise it when the first edition is out.

Thanks Matt,

An congratulations to all involved in progressing open textbooks in this part of the world.

As an open textbook -- Is there a public link where we can access the early drafts? I'm keen to see how the OERu network could potential adopt this open text in one of our courses for formal academic credit.

Hi all,

In case you missed it, a team at Otago University, alongside teams across Australasia, spent this last weekend writing an undergraduate Media Studies textbook.  The team are going to spend the next few months editing the results, in time for the start of the first semester, 2014.

They’ve also been assiduously documenting their planning sessions – and even recording hangouts – so that they can also produce a ‘cookbook’ for other open textbook teams to learn from the experiment.  If you want to learn more, I introduce the project here. The press release has some choice quotes from Erika and Richard, and can be read here.

The ODT, Techday and Idealog also wrote about the project.

Congratulations to all involved!

Cheers,
Matt
