Hi

New site ok - shame it was unavailable last weekend.

No comment on this list about redirection policy yet.

An example

A former case study was at
http://www.creativecommons.org.nz/creative_commoners/luke_rowell_disaste
radio.html
Now returns
HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
With the message
The page you are trying to reach does not exist, or has been
moved. Please use the menus or the search box to find what you are
looking for.

So was it my fault?

If I google "Luke Rowell DISASTERADIO case study"
http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=Luke+Rowell+DISASTERADIO+case+study
google points me to the 404 pages...

These should be returning a 301 - A 301 redirect means that the page has
moved to a new location, permanently.

Yet if I search the CCNZ site I find what I may want - but that's
annoying
http://www.creativecommons.org.nz/2010/03/luke-rowell-disasteradio/

This would be very easy to do a one to one redirect if using apache, and
some smarter matching if you wanted. I am sure the server being used can
manage some form of redirection

Does this matter - well I think it does if CCNZ wants stuff found via
google and existing links on other sites and documents.

Try it yourself

Go past page one of this result
http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=site%3Acreativecommons.org.nz

And click on some links...

Regards

paul

Kia ora koutou

This looks great! I'm sad to see the forums go, but you're right that
they never really took off. Is there a plan to archive the postings in
some form, or should I do that myself before the old site disappears?
I'm excited to hear about the new community engagement strategy Richard
refers to in his intro to the upgrade.

One question though, what has become of all the case studies that Jane
produced for the site? This seems to have disappeared down the rabbit
hole along with the user accounts. Also, will there be more case studies
researcher and written? I think it's really encouraging for people to
see others successfully testing the waters before they take the plunge
themselves.
