Hi Leigh and Virginia,

It's a very exciting time for both content providers and those working to disseminate material in new and easily accessible ways, particularly as New Zealand institutions and Government bodies are making bolder steps to open up access to content.

Down at CCANZ we are anticipating a collaborative approach to administrating new technologies and trends that have arisen from this environment. We look forward to speaking further with you!

Regards

Jane

Hi there,

Digital New Zealand is not currently doing anything in formal partnership with Creative Commons New Zealand but we're very open to the idea!

There are a number of informal things we are doing with regards to CC that could offer a starting point:

1. You'll note under the facet for license on searches powered by DigitalNZ that we have a 'Some rights reserved' label. See: http://search.digitalnz.org/search?search_text=*%3A*&commit=Search

Behind the scenes, we have encoded the URLs for Creative Commons licences, where content providers are using them.

While we don't have an 'advanced search' as such like Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/) we can turn on filtering by specific CC licence in this interface.

2. We have an open API* that developers can use in applications (such as a 'search CC material' widget or interface): http://www.digitalnz.org/developer

We would be interested to hear about levels of user demand for that / possible partnership opportunities.

For example, it may also be something we consider adding to our search widget builder:
http://www.digitalnz.org/customise/create

* In short, an API (Application Programming Interface) allows programmers access to a dataset, in this case metadata and thumbnails aggregated from organisations throughout New Zealand.

3. We advocate for the use of CC in appropriate settings with our content providers, and would welcome participation in our community and advisory service from CCNZ.

Just a few thoughts in advance of lunch - please feel free to get in touch!
