Dylan,

Sounds like you have some completely valid points. I would never claim that our apps are bug free, but we have attempted to do testing, so I'm sorry you ran into these problems.
Do you know what version of the app you were using? I know there were some issues with deleting tags pre-1.0, but I believe those have been fixed. Additionally, if the upload fails, starting at 1.0 ccPublisher offers to send an error report to me. I do look at those reports, and have fixed several bugs which have been reported in that manner. Did you see such an error report? The application may also create a file named err.log in the installation directory, which I can use to debug problems you've encountered.

In regards to starting off screen, what version of Windows are you running on? I haven't experienced this problem myself, but I, too, would find it annoying so I want to make sure it gets fixed.
The source code is available at Sourceforge, in the CC Tools project (http://sf.net/projects/cctools). Feel free to contact me directly for information on CVS tags, etc, or take a look at http://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/CC_Tools_Repository_Map for information on the different modules in CVS.

As I stated earlier, the points you make are valid, although I'd encourage you to try the latest version. I think it's important to realize that we are not omnicient, and as such rely on feedback from our users. And that's not just feedback about bugs, but also about ways we could improve the interface or user experience. We definitly don't want amatuer-looking applications, so if you have specific suggestions for the interface, please let me know. I can't speak for everyone at CC, but I know I receive the best feedback, bug reports and suggestions from members of this list and other "end users."
I'd encourage you to add your feature requests, improvment suggestions, etc to http://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/CcPublisherRequests, or just email them to me.

Thanks again for trying ccPublisher, and let's keep this discussion going so we can improve the overall state of CC applications.

Sincerely,

Nathan R. Yergler

To be absolutely honest, I'd be happier if the existing applications worked.

For example, I've tried ccPublisher with MP3s under Windows, and found the
following killer flaws:

1. Existing tags are deleted...why? This makes the application useless.
2. The application often fails, by failing to display a Next button when the
process has not been completed.

Less important, but still irritating, the application launches part way off
my screen, so every time I use it, I have to move it.
I'd try and fix the program myself, but I can't find the source code; this
is probably due to my unfamiliarity with Python.

I'm sorry to say this, but I don't think the Creative Commons software
development process has been properly considered. At the very least, the
application is poorly thought through, the user interface is poorly
designed, and the testing is incomplete. I don't know what kind of project
management you apply, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Bluntly, the existing applications appear amateur, making Creative Commons
appear amateur. I do not believe this is an image Creative Commons should be
projecting.

I've created a page in the CC Developer Wiki where I'd like to begin a list/discussion of new tools, applications, and extensions people would like to see CC support in. This page is just intended to serve as a "white board" for a collective, long-term brainstorming session. As ideas become fleshed out or implementations begin, they can split off onto their own page(s). Go ahead, add your ideas at http://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Developer/BlueSky.
