Based on feedback from an early adopter, I am strongly considering
dropping recommended use of the WCOP frame. See
<http://creativecommons.org/learn/technology/mp3> for the current draft
recommendation.
Reasons:
* License claim URL is already recommended to appear at end of TCOP
frame.
* Some popular id3 libraries and tools (e.g., Dr. Tag
<http://www.drtag.de>) don't support writing to WCOP.
* Recommendation will be simpler without WCOP.
* Easier to translate to other file formats, which may not support both
copyright text and copyright URL fields.
Downside:
* Software looking for licensing information in ID3 would have to parse
out the license claim URL from the contents of TCOP.
A regular expression like /\s*(\S+)\s*$/ would very forgivingly extract
the license claim URL from TCOP.
However, the draft already instructs software to look at TCOP to ensure
that the license claim URLs in WCOP and TCOP match so as not to mislead
users who can see the contents of TCOP but not WCOP.
Feedback welcome.
