To Whom It May Concern:
I'm a webmaster (http://www.biblicalresearchjournal.org) who wants to use the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License, but who insists on adhering to the HTML markup standards set by the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) for HTML 4.01.

Unfortunately the code that you provide to insert CC-Licenses onto web pages is non-validating. You can check this for yourself at the W3C's Validator Page, http://validator.w3.org/, by cutting and pasting the your code, in the following context, into the "Validate by Direct Input" text box:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"
 "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/html4-transitional.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>test</title>
</head>
<body>
<!-- This was cut-and-pasted from http://creativecommons.org: -->
<a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/">
<img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width:0" src="http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nc-nd/3.0/88x31.png" />
</a>
<br />This
<span xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" href="http://purl.org/dc/dcmitype/Text" rel="dc:type">work</span> is licensed under a
<a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License</a>.
</body>
</html>
In order to use the CC License on my website, and at the same time, keep my markup valid according to W3C standards, I have modified the code as follows (which you may also test for yourselves on the Validator Page):
<!-- <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"
 "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/html4-transitional.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>test</title>
</head>
<body>
<!-- This is what appears on my website: -->
<!-- Creative Commons License -->
<div class="copyright-notice"><a href= "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width: 0" src="http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nc-nd/3.0/88x31.png"/></a><br />
© 1994-2007 <a href="mailto:administrator AT biblicalresearchjournal.org">Biblical Research Journal</a>.<br />
This website and its contents are protected under <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/" target="_blank">Creative Common's 3.0  License</a>.<br/> Permission is granted for non-commercial copy and distribution of the works posted here<br/>
in complete and unaltered form and attributed to the work's author.<br />

</body>
</html>
I encourage your to offer your licenses marked up with valid HTML. Doing so would greatly enhance their usefulness to web developers, both now and in the future.
