A copyright protects the way in which an idea has been expressed. It does not protect the idea itself, nor the style or manner in which the idea has been expressed.
Anyone is allowed to build upon the ideas contained in a work, the new expression must however be original (the definition of which varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction) for it to be considered an work of authorship.
