Here are what I have gathered about PHPWiki from various pages (shown at the end of each category):

My overall impression is that it is among the suited ones for the project, though there are some critical uncertainty regarding its capabilities to handle Japanese texts (for the body text, user name, and page name).

More concretely,
- it is relatively safe against vandals
- looks mostly good (except for the CamelCased username)
- easy to use
- have most of basic functions (but no page renaming, it seems)
- is very unclear about its ability to handle Japanese language

As long as the uncertainties related to the Japanese language processing are clarified
or could be fixed as we go along, probably this is worth trying.

I've talked to the admin of http://www.chinajapan.org/wiki/ (Konrad Mitchell Lawson) via email if he knows about PhpWiki's functionalities regarding Japanese, but replies suggest he is not very certain, either. (His is a PHPWiki only slightly modified to handle UTF-8 texts, but it has just started recently.)

He also pointed out that the developers at Sourceforge for the PHPWiki have been inactive for these 9 months. That, I think, could mean that we do not have much external sources to rely on when it comes to patches, customization, etc. That worries me a bit, indeed.

And here are details:

1) protection measures against vandals.

Preserving IP/username of those who post yes -- yes
Blocking certain IP easily -- seems no
Reverting edits easily -- seems no (but not that difficult)
Blocking certain user easily -- seems no
Lock/ unlock easily -- yes
Preserving all the past versions -- yes, and I think this is a very good feature.
Backup/dump easily -- some
Restore easily -- not clear
Deleting a page -- yes
Deleting a version of a page -- seems no

All in all, this is not so bad unless the wiki gets harsh attacks from vandals (which I think unlikely,
but I should not count on my expectation here.)

http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/PhpWikiAdministration (Nov. 7, 2001) (yes, very old)

2) look and feel

In general -- looks decent (just my impression)
links/ page names without CamelCase -- seems ok (good)
Username without camel case -- seems not accepted

I personally think that camel case stuff is not a attractive to a wide range of people. That's the
only complain I have so far.

3) other basic functions

search -- good
rename a page -- no
edit preview -- yes
tables -- yes (looks quite intuitive and easy)
images -- can display, cannot be uploaded
heading -- yes
bold, italic, underscore -- yes
bullet points -- yes

Why no rename!? but otherwise very good.

4) language issues

Japanese interface -- no
Handling japanese texts -- not tested well, incomplete
Serch Japanese texts -- seems working
Japanese username -- seems no
Japanese pagename -- unclear

Well, a lot of uncertainties in this department...

5) External support

unclear - developer team inactive for 9months at Sourceforge.
