Per a previous thread we've gone ahead and prototyped possible changes
to the language selector on the license engine. At
http://staging.creativecommons.org/license/ you can see the new
chooser at the bottom of the page. John Doig (cc'd), the newest
member of the technology team at CC, put together the prototype
changes. While it does clean up the language list, I can see one
major drawback compared to the previous iteration -- if I come to the
site and I get the page in a language I can't read, how will I know
that drop-down list contains my language? (as opposed to previously
where at least my language name was in that language). This may not
be that big of an issue -- the site already does content negotiation
so that if you're browser identifies you as preferring German, you'll
get German without asking. But it does highlight some tension between
the goals of cleaning up the look and making the license chooser
accessible in many languages. I'd appreciate your feedback on this
issue.
You can also see on staging a preview of some changes we're looking at
for the license engine landing page and the results page. The landing
page has a slightly simpler layout and an additional paragraph of
introductory text. The results page cleans up the button selection
and eliminates the ambiguous (at best) "see how the license will look"
link. We're applying what we learned in developing the software for
CC0 (there are still a few bugs with the results page, including one
sentence that refers to a "waiver"; it's a work in progress). You can
expect an announcement in a day or two about the availability of the
strings for translation.
Thanks again for all your help,
Nathan
