Hi all:
Alexander from CC Austria brought this up to me a few weeks ago. The European Commission is running a public consultation on "Building the European data economy". There is an online questionnaire that is accepting responses until 26 April.
There are questions relating to whether businesses are granted adequate protection in the raw data they collect using new types of technologies such as sensors embedded in machines, tools, and other devices. Wikimedia is concerned, as they think the Commission might be thinking about introducing a new neighbouring right on raw data. There are other questions related to whether companies and even public entities could be granted access to such data for particular purposes, as well as the role of the Commission in issuing guidance on access and re-use of these types of data.
I put the questionnaire into a google doc and highlighted in green a few of the questions that might be relevant for us.
Is anyone here tracking the issue? Do you think it'd be useful for Creative Commons Europe to pull together a response to the questionnaire, or partner with Wikimedia or other groups on it?
Thanks,
tvol
