Hi CC Europeans,

to follow up on the explanations of CC Legal via the lists and http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/41874 and also because several teams seem to be eager to get started, here's some things to keep in mind when you take the first steps:

Preliminary considerations

- First of all, think about which countries share your language as an official one and get in touch with the CC teams there. If you don't know how to contact them, ask Gwen and/or me.

- Determine whether the variants of your language allow for a unified translation across countries/jurisdictions. Often they will and CC strongly encourages to have widely spoken languages as unified translations.

- Assemble a team to do the translation. A lawyer must be involved in that, either taking part in the actual translation or at least checking it before it's sent to us RCs (we're the first who are supposed to review any drafts, resolve translation issues such as terminology etc.). Every Legal Lead should be qualify as having enough expertise to check the translation. If you are not sure, ask us.

Start the process

- For the Deeds/Choosers (highest priority, many languages already done): Start translating right away via Transifex (https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/CC/), mind the newly added strings 272, 319 and 320, and don't forget to review the translated strings and click the appropriate button, otherwise they will not show up on the CC website.

- For 4.0 Legalcode (second highest priority): Fill in the wiki form at http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Form:4.0_Translation.

- For CC0 (lower priority): Fill in the wiki form at http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Form:CC0_Translation

In both forms you'll be asked some detailed questions about the coordination between jurisdictions, the team, the timeline etc. (hint: fill out the form in one go, the CC Wiki is quite quick to let your login expire)

- Send a link to your completed form to us RCs.

- Wait for us to get back to you and give you a green light.

- Start translating after reading http://wiki.creativecommons.org/4.0_translation_guide.

- Once you are done with a first draft, let us know and we'll coordinate with you regarding the public comment period that will follow.

- ...

There's of course some more steps to the complete process, but not all of these involve activities for you and we'll explain stuff individually if necessary. For general reference, check these:

Best
John & Gwen
