European Copyright for the

Digital Age

Tuesday, 18 February 2014
11h00-13h00 (registration and coffee from 10h30 onwards)
Résidence Palace, 155 rue de la Loi, 1040 Brussels

Dear Alek Tarkowski,

The conclusions from the European Council in October 2013 called for the “establishment of a copyright regime for the digital age.” Against this backdrop – and in view of Europe’s urgent need to spearhead the economic recovery and kick-start new sources of growth – the coming months will be crucial, with a public consultation underway and European Commission proposals expected.

Is Europe’s copyright system fit to meet the demands of the digital age in general and a generation of digital natives in particular? How can it help safeguard the interests of content creators while also ensuring a conducive framework for Europe’s rapidly growing digital economy? Ensuring a timely discussion on the topic, the Lisbon Council convenes the High-Level Roundtable on European Copyright for the Digital Age. The roundtable will explore the key economic and legal aspects of copyright reform and engage top policymakers and experts in a discussion on the way forward.

Keynote presentations from:
  • Martin Senftleben, professor of intellectual property and head of the private law department, VU University Amsterdam
  • Piotr Stryszowski, economist and policy analyst, directorate for science technology and industry, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
Additional interventions from:
  • Pierre Delsaux, deputy director-general, DG internal market and services, European Commission
  • Heritiana Ranaivoson, senior researcher, iMinds and Vrije Universiteit Brussel
  • Marietje Schaake, member, European Parliament
If you plan on attending this invitation-only event, please send an e-mail at your earliest convenience with the subject heading "Copyright Roundtable" to: rsvp AT lisboncouncil.net. Seats will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis. This invitation is to you personally and not transferable. Only registered participants will have access to the venue.
The Lisbon Council is a Brussels-based think tank and policy network committed to making a positive contribution by engaging political leaders and the public at large in a constructive exchange about the economic and social challenges of the 21st century.
