I use SliTaz as my main Linux on about 15 different laptops. The most ancient one on which it works is a Toshiba 430cdt with only 20mb of RAM .. I generally only use text-mode console on this machine .. Xvesa works, but even with my extreme patience X is too slow.

SliTaz requires Pentium or later CPU. I have one 486 machine and BL is the only Linux that runs decently on it.

SliTaz 5.0 should indeed be a very good system! I'm still using 3.0 (from 2010) on most of my older machines, and have been using 4.0 (from 2012) on the newer ones .. but there have been so many upgrades to important applications (Firefox, MuseScore, etc.) that I have been eagerly awaiting 5.0.

Do you think Slitaz linux might be of some use?  I have had success with Slitaz 2.0 and Slitaz 3.0-Xvesa.  The latest cooking for Slitaz 5.0 looks promising as well.  If Puppy is too much at 100 meg check out older versions of Slitaz.  They use a more recent kernel than BL.
