I went ahead anyway and in menuconfig chose:
SCSI low-level drivers SATA support (and all the individual
drivers) and when I booted ramdisk BL2 with this kernel
it still did not find the SATA drive, only CD-ROM (hda).
DSL linux kernel 2.4.31 did not find the SATA drive either.
hda=sr0 and hdb=sr1 (scsi emulation for CD burners).
Unless someone has a better idea I will eventually compile
a 2.6 kernel with scsi support instead of 2.4
