How do I use PPPoE DSL connection with dynamic IP address in linux, with my own DSL modem? An Analog Telephone Adaptor can probably serve as a DSL modem since it has a place to enter PPPoE login and password, or a DSL router (combo).

Linux (ubuntu) works with the local phone company's DSL modem over a neighbor's broadband connection. But if we replace their DSL modem with a DSL router, firefox gets redirected to the phone company's page saying we need Windows. A windows laptop plugged into the same router accesses the web. We can ping the rest of the network.

There is something missing in linux related to PPPoE. DSL-HOWTO says you need a 2.4 or later kernel with PPPoE support which is somehow related to ppp. The link to more info was broken. Do we need another driver module?

I was told we are not 'authenticating' - meaning the login and password are not being sent to AT&T by linux, which generates the error message and 'help' page. Windows must be sending them properly (or the phone company's DSL modem sends them directly). The login and password are set up in the DSL modem but not in Windows.

A very well-meaning tech support person in India spent 40 minutes trying to help and knows this works in Mac OS 10.4 (BSD). You choose PPPoE and enter the login and password. At one point he suggested that I contact the maker of the DSL router, and then that I contact linux. He would like to learn linux so he can be more helpful since more people are calling with linux related problems.
