How could someone running Windows 95/98 (say, Windows 98 FE or SE in
this case), and who is using a dual-boot fat16 "C:\" partition,
effectively enable selection of BasicLinux within the initial Windows
95/98 bootup menu ??
Seeking a higher-level "BasicLinux 3.50" bootup choice instead of the
default "Previous version of MS-DOS"
Yep, know all about editing MSDOS.SYS's [Options] section for enabling
Windows and DOS dual-booting.
Also know how BasicLinux will load correctly once DOS/DOS-mode starts,
this from the following verbatim instructions of the unzipped
BL3-50.ZIP's READ.TXT file:
---- begin quote ----
Minimum requirements
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Intel 386 or compatible
3mb RAM
DOS (or Windows 95/98 running in DOS mode)
Starting BasicLinux
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unzip BL3-5x.zip to the C:\baslin directory. The directory must be called
baslin, and it must be a top directory (not a sub-directory of another
directory).
If you have less than 8mb RAM, you must activate swap memory. You do this
by unzipping swap.zip (in C:\baslin).
To start BL3, type BOOT and press the ENTER key.
Problem?
~~~~~~~~
To boot correctly, BL3 needs a relatively clean DOS. If BL3 refuses to
boot (or it crashes when you try to run X), start your DOS without extras:
no CONFIG.SYS, no AUTOEXEC.BAT, no Windows.
---- end quote ----
Also know how to effectively edit AUTOEXEC.DOS (+CONFIG.DOS) in
Windows9x protected-mode, so that upon reboot into "clean" DOS
real-mode, the resulting AUTOEXEC.BAT (+CONFIG.SYS) will automatically
load BasicLinux's LOADLIN from the BOOT.BAT batchfile.
Append to the end of AUTOEXEC.DOS (AUTOEXEC.BAT file in "clean" DOS real-mode
..
cd c:\baslin
c:\baslin\boot.bat
Question here is, How can one possibly edit the Windows 95/98 IO.SYS
so that its last initial bootup-menu choice will be something like
"BasicLinux 3.50" instead of the default "Previous version of MS-DOS"
??
Have already looked up to little avail,
Thanks at all for further info on a "higher-level" OS bootup
alternative for selecting BasicLinux.
