Yes I tried those but it turned out to be hdg in the end. Working
now.

I used your mkmod line for hdg. Very useful, thanks.

I added to name of drive to /etc/pcmcia/config, I think that helped.
Before that it was saying "unsupported card".
Then it found the model of the component ide drive inside the box,
so I realised Id have to add the regular CDROM modules as well as
the PCMCIA modules. Cardmgr also told me hdg.

Yup, got a parallel one of those going now.

That was the clue.
