Salve,

Giuseppe and James, can you test it also in BL2?

I tried the Elinks from http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl on bl2 but it gives
the same output as in bl3 (i.e. blank screen).
It needs a 2.4 kernel

On bl2 (Pentium S with 32 Mb Ram) I have Lynx with ssl support.
On this computer I would try a graphical (light) browser with ssl support,
if Ram is enough.

It is enough for Opera with swap space. Use 800x600 resolution and fewer colors (64K not 16M) to save memory.

Steven's Links2 for bl3 would work in bl2?

No, it needs the BL3 X. My links2-nongraphical will work in BL2, or if you add libvga.so.1.9.25 and libjpeg and libpng and libtiff, the graphical (svgalib) version will work there.

Links2 seems to handle more SSL sites than links 1, but it won't work for looking at my phone bill at the link:

?page=p_my-bill-view -- what is this?

lynx won't work because the site requires javascript to log in.

Last month this site worked. They keep breaking it for me. One time I phoned and had them look up a year's worth of bills for me and read them to me. They were nice about it.

For Links2.1 pre 28 ssl (last version with javascript) would I need some
additional libraries and/or packages?

The same requirements as links2.1 pre 33, libvga libtiff libpng libjpg and libc.so.6.

Alternatively I could try an old version of Opera.

In this case would I need operalib.tgz from http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl ?
Or the package for Opera in bl3 would work as well in bl2?

They will both work. The BL3 package(s) and instructions require that you first install the full glibc, while mine includes the few glibc files that you actually need. BL3 package misc libs includes a lot of things you don't actually need for Opera (I think you only need libz from it). The BL3 package of extra X libraries also includes a few X libraries not needed for opera (it needs Xext SM ICE). Steven probably did this so as not to make multiple packages for each program people wanted to install.
If you have a small hard disk and don't plan to install a lot of other programs, my method will save space. Run ldconfig after installing my package (which includes a later ldconfig than BL3 comes with).

The BL3 packages use libraries from Slackware 4.0 and mine are from Slackware 7.1 (a bit larger). His recommendation is to use glibc from Slackware 9.0 and I included Slackware 8.1 glibc files (because I have the CD already and it would be a long download for 9.0).

Thank you for any help.

Regards,
Giuseppe

Same results here. Doesn't matter whether the site is remote (e.g.,
google) or local (e.g., hotlist.html). Like it's missing fonts, or fonts
are transparent or something. Same in console as in terminal. Light on
dark or dark on light terminal makes no difference--still blank pages.
Anyway, nice try. I can see that even tabs work.

Odd. I only tested it while chrooted from BL2 to BL3. I wonder what is
missing. I wish someone better at compiling would tackle elinks (with
javascript) and get something that works for everyone.

Giuseppe and James, can you test it also in BL2?

Works fine for me in BL2 or chrooted to BL3 in a console in color or
in an rxvt (does not display colors there, probably because I compiled it
small - it can be compiled to show 256 colors).

www.grex.org displays for me and downloads and displays www.umich.edu in 6
seconds. Steven's BL3 links2 (nongraphical) with or without ssl downloads
it in 4 seconds. (On my fast computer).

In BL3 rxvt the rectangle displayed when I type 'g' for 'goto' is made up
of g and backwards s rather than a thin single line (in BL2). Missing
font? In a console it is a thin double line.

elinks lets you load it with URL specified.
elinks www.umich.edu
Or if you don't specify, it starts you with a Goto screen.
You cannot just type in part of the URL as you can with lynx.

There is a wrap text W.

I don't see a way to number links. So it probably should be compiled with
gpm support next time. Nor are links underlined. At some sites (mine for
instance) links are blue and other text white.

Using zgv on a 200K image under elinks (at a website) appears to crash it
(I get a black screen after the image downloads). Still buggy.
Links1 and 2 don't do this (with 512MB RAM).

In Setup Terminal Options 'Transparency' is selected by default - would it
help to turn it off if you get invisible pages? Or turn off Color?

I turned on Block Cursor, and Underline (no obvious effect)

James
