Can I keep the dos partition and then put LILO in MBR to boot dos, BL-2 and
BL-3?
How can I change lilo.conf?
My lilo.conf for DOS, BL3 and two ways to boot BL2 (two different kernels, both stored in /boot(. DOS is hda1, BL3 hda2, BL 2 hda3.
Omit the parts after ## on each line, which are just my explanations.
boot=/dev/hda #Or boot=/dev/fd0 to boot from a floppy disk with lilo
install=/boot/boot.b
delay=50 ##should boot to BL2 after 5 seconds - I think this is optional
default=BL2 ##You can change this to BL3 or DOS.
other=/dev/hda1 ##Other is the DOS partition.
table=/dev/hda
label=DOS
image=/boot/bzimagesmf.431 ##This is my 2.4.31 kernel - you can use zimage
label=BL3
root=/dev/hda2
read-write
vga=791
##The above line is for 1024 framebuffer - omit it unless you have a VESA ##2.0 capable video chip that does framebuffer
image=/boot/bzimasmf.431
label=BL2
root=/dev/hda3
read-only
vga=788 ##This is for 800x600 framebuffer, 24-bit color (?).
image=/boot/bzimapda.431 ##My usbserial kernel for use with a PDA
label=PDA
root=/dev/hda3
read-only
##The above is BL2 booted with a different kernel, no framebuffer
You can also boot BL2 or BL3 with various other parameters in lilo.conf.
Now I have:
linux swap in hda1; BL-3 installed from fd in had5; empty hda6 and hda7;
LILO from BL-3 in MBR.
BL-3 boot when th pc is on.
Before putting LILO on MBR I changed lilo.conf in BL-3 from:
#boot=/dev/hda ### this line puts lilo in MBR of primary harddrive
### otherwise lilo goes in root partition
image=/boot/zimage
label=BL3
root=CURRENT
read-write
to:
boot=/dev/hda ### this line puts lilo in MBR of primary harddrive
### otherwise lilo goes in root partition
image=/boot/zimage
label=BL3
root=/dev/hda5
read-only (looking on the mailing list it seems I had to keep
"read-write" in this line but it works)
BL3 should be read-write. If you boot it read-only you probably cannot save anything to disk. Try editing a file with e3pi and saving it (or copying a file).
If I understand correctly, BL2 is mounted read-only when it boots, and during boot it is remounted as read-write after running e2fsck. You should probably boot BL3 from floppy disk every few days and run e2fsck on it (or run it from BL2) to fix any filesystem errors. It should not be mounted when you run e2fsck (or it should be mounted read-only).
If you make the ext2 partitions with BL2 fdisk, BL3 e2fsck is too old and will not work on them in case you need to do a rescue of BL2 with BL3. (The BL2 ramdisk and floppy disk versions do not contain e2fsck).. I suggest using BL3 floppy disk fdisk to make all the partitions. Or put a copy of BL2 e2fsck in DOS BL2 directory so you can mount the DOS partition and run e2fsck from there with ramdisk BL2 for rescue.

thanks for help.

I can't find the instructions for installing BL2 to
hd at the BL2 site either, but if you look in the FAQ
there is a list of packages to download
The FAQ is the wrong place to look. The instructions
are inside BL2. Execute install (as it says on the BL2
startup screen).
Cheers,
Steven
