Hello to all,
i downloaded version 3.4 of BasicLinux (cat /proc/version says: Linux version
2.2.26) a couple of days ago. So far, it runs quite well but i cannot connect
to my local ethernet. Searching the archived mails with google i didn't find
any indication of someone having had the same problem before, so i post it
here.
After loading the 8390.o and smc-ultra.o modules, which i downloaded from a
slackware 4 site, with insmod, i get the following message, which looks quite
well to my eyes:
smc-ultra.c: Presently autoprobing (not recommended) for a single card.
smc-ultra.c:v2.02 2/3/98 Donald Becker (becker AT cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov)
eth0: SMC Ultra at 0x300, 00 00 C0 DB 4F D4, IRQ 10 memory 0xcc000-0xcffff.
Next i configure the interface eth0 with the following result:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:C0:DB:4F:D4
inet addr:192.168.1.18 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x310 Memory:cc000-d0000
This again looks ok to me. However, after issuing the 'ifconfig 192.168.1.18
up' command, i get the confusing message 'Trying to free free IRQ10'. And
when displaying /proc/interrupts the interrupt of the network card (IRQ 10)
is not listed. The system does not respond to ping-requests nor is it
possible to ping other machines. Even worse, when trying to do so, the system
issues the message 'eth0: xmit on stopped card' and keeps on issuing this
message until power off.
Doing the same with TRINUX (another tiny Linux distribution, as you might
know) on the same machine works fine. In fact, the output messages of insmod
and ifconfig even look identical to the above shown ones (with the exception
that the 'Trying to free ...' message doesn't appear). This should definitely
rule out any cabling or adressing problems and it also suggests that the
smc-ultra.o is the correct driver for the network card.
By the way, the apparent contradiction between the I/O and memory adresses
shown by insmod and ifconfig, appear identically at TRINUX, so this doesn't
seem to be harmfull.
Trying to run BasicLinux on another machine, with a different network card
and hence a different network driver module leads to similar results: it
doesn't work either.
So, what might be going wrong here ???
