That is a characteristic of FAT16 (DOS) partitions.
It only records eight characters before the dot and
three characters behind the dot. All other characters
(and case) are lost when the file is saved to that
filesystem.

Yes, it can be confusing. Except to us DOS dinosaurs,
who grew up with 8.3 filenames.
