I have been trying to connect an USB memory stick to my
BL2 (Slackware 7.1) system and found David's package
usb-2.2.16-BL3 containing modules and patches.
1. Is it necessary to patch the kernel _and_ load the modules
No, the patch is only if you want to compile your own. The provided
precompiled modules should work with BL2, since it is very similar to
the BL3.32 and earlier kernels.
2. Which modules need to be loaded for a generic memory stick and
which parameters are expected?
For a memory stick, insmod scsi_mod.o and sr_mod.o (scsi modules) from
Slackware 7.1, then insmod usbcore.o. Then try the usb-uhci.o,
usb-ohci.o, and ohci.o modules in turn until one inserts (each one is
for a specific USB port motherboard or add-on card chipset). Finally,
insert usb-storage.o, and check dmesg for details about which device
to mount.
Please report if your memory stick works - mine does not work with
either these drivers or the BL3.40 drivers (but does with a 2.4
kernel).
3. Will there be any problem with applying the patches to a
BL2 system?
The patches are for 2.2.16 source code, if you have it. They are not
necessary if you only want to use the precompiled modules.
